To All Graduate Students:

(1)   Newly admitted students should take the Graduate Essay Test (GET exam) as soon as they are admitted to the program.  If you do not receive a passing score on the GET, you are required to immediately take SCI 614, Business 514, CHS 514, Education 614, a preliminary course in English skills or another alternative as determined by the Graduate Coordinator.

(2) The full time graduate student load is 9-12 units each semester.  Most financial aid or scholarship packages require full time attendance.  International students are required to a minimum of 9 units each semester, unless they are in the last semester of completing their culminating experience requirement.  A request to exceed 16 units must be made in the Graduate Division Office using the Request to Exceed Regular Academic Unit Load form, signed by the student.

(3) Students must meet the program requirements published in the Bulletin in the semester in which they are classified in their major or, the semester in which their Graduate Approved Program (GAP) is filed and approved by the Graduate Division Office.  If enrollment is interrupted, Bulletin rights change.

(4) No more than 6 units may be transferred from other institutions.  The transfer course(s) must have been completed after earning a bachelor's degree.  The course(s) cannot have been used to meet any degree requirements.  In addition, the course(s) cannot have been taken earlier than 7 years from the date the student plans to graduate from the program.  Requests to include transfer courses should be made using the "Request for Graduate Program Transfer Unit Evaluation Form".

(5) Graduate work must be completed in no more than seven years from the date the first course of the GAP. No credit will be given for course work taken more than seven years prior to the expected date of graduation.  Only one extension of the Seven Year Rule can be granted.  Students requesting an extension need to include in their request, letters of support from their academic advisors and a timeline for completion of degree.

(6) If students leave the University for more than one semester, they must be formally readmitted to the University and the program, and must meet the requirements in effect at the time of re-entry or, at the time they file a new GAP.

(7) The GAP may be submitted any time after 9 units have been completed and must be submitted before the student completes the last 6 units.  If student changes his or her program of study after filing the GAP, he/she must file a Petition for GAP Substitution or Exception form.

(8) Students must have a GPA of at least 3.0 in all coursework on the GAP to register for the culminating experience requirement.  Students will need to submit Proposal for Culminating Experience Form at least one semester prior to beginning ENGR 898 Thesis or ENGR 895 Applied Research Project.  At least two culminating experience committee members must be tenured/tenure-track faculty members.  Thesis (ENGR 898) is a written product of an original study.  Student needs to follow the Thesis Guidelines when writing the thesis report.  Oral defense is required for this option.  Applied Research Project (ENGR 895) is a comprehensive research-based paper detailing the objectives, methods, and findings.  Oral presentation is required for this option.

(9) Culminating Experience Proposals must be submitted to the Graduate Division Office in ADM 254 by the deadlines. A complete Culminating Experience Proposal should include a detailed statement of purpose, how information will be obtained or collected, and from what sources will data and information be obtained. If human or animal subjects will be used, students must attach Human  or Animal Subject Protocol Approval form.

(10) Students need to follow the steps for completing a Master's Degree

(11) Students will need to file an Application for Award of the Master's Degree on time. Graduation is not automatic upon completion of degree requirements. The Application for Graduation is filed in the Graduate Division, after the appropriate fee is paid to the Cashier's Office. The application must be filed by the deadline date (published in the Class Schedule and Bulletin) in the term in which the student expects to graduate.

(12)   Flier announcements must be posted at least one week prior to oral defense of your thesis or  presentation of your applied research project, as part of the Culminating Experience Requirement for graduation.

I wish you a very successful and rewarding experience while you are studying here.  Please contact me if you have any questions about graduation requirements.
