ONLINE ACCESS:

Using SFSU as your Internet Service Provider (ISP):

To use the databases the Library subscribes to from off-campus,
you must use the SFSU Internet Kit to dial into the campus modem pool. You can download the software at:

http://www.sfsu.edu/~helpdesk/kits.htm

If you need assistance installing or using this software, you can contact the HelpDesk at

http://www.sfsu.edu/~compsvcs/helpdesk.htm

Sorry, the Library does not offer assistance in getting connected.

Once the software has been installed, you can connect to the HRAF database (or any other) by going to the Choose an Electronic Database page

http://www.library.sfsu.edu/eresource/choosedb.html

and typing "ehraf" (or any other database name without the quotes) in the keyword box. The database description will come up, and then you click on:

"Internet access available" to connect.

Using non-SFSU Internet Service Providers:

If you are a currently enrolled SFSU student, or SFSU faculty/staff, you are able to access our electronic resources without a specially assigned ID and password. If you use SFSU as your Internet Service Provider, you should be able to use the databases with no restrictions by choosing Electronic Resources from the Library Home Page

http://www.library.sfsu.edu

If you use an outside Internet Service Provider, such as MindSpring, ATT, or AOL, please refer to the instructions on

http://www.library.sfsu.edu/eresource/proxyinfo.html

You will need to have a Library PIN to access the databases in this manner. Instructions for setting your Library PIN are on the instructions page and also on:

http://www.library.sfsu.edu/eresource/pininfo.html

Master's theses:

http://www.library.sfsu.edu/general/faq.html#master

How do I find SFSU Master's Theses using the online catalog?

If you know the exact title or author of a Master's thesis, use the TITLE or AUTHOR options on the InvestiGator online catalog.

To scan the theses for a particular department, use the

WORD option. Type in the word "degree" and the

Department name. For example, to see the titles of master's theses in the Business School, use the WORD option, and type in: "degree business".

Proceed through the title screens to review all items.

If you want to browse the online catalog for Masters theses by call number, they are in the call number range AS36 (year) (Degree) (Author#) so if you were browsing the Masters theses in English for 1995, your search would be:

AS36 1995 ENGL

If you do not know the department but want to locate theses on a particular subject, you can do a keyword search on the subject (we suggest that you use Library of Congress subject headings) or title (if you know the words from the title) and then LIMIT by LOCATION to MASTERS THESES COLLECTION.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to backlogs and staffing limitations, we are approximately a year behind in our cataloging of SFSU Masters Theses. If you are looking for a particular Masters Thesis that was published within the last year, it may not be done with our processing/cataloging yet.
