Students will be expected to develop video programming segments for the times during the games when there is a break in the action, i.e., natural break points depending on the sport; half-time, between innings, and pre- and post-game features and interviews.
Course objectives: Specific objectives for this course:
1. Student will be able to operate the full range of equipment required for the class on an intermediate/advanced level so that the production is effective and of high production quality.
2. Student will participate in all games and produce at least two pre- or post-game programs (packages) for each sport covered. Student will be required to participate in the following games: (See schedule after objectives section).
3. Student will identify at least four production positions that he/she will be competent in to the satisfaction of the standards of the instructor. These standards will be explained.
4. Student will work with other crew members amicably and will develop colleagial relations with other class members so that a cooperative effort is made for the good of the production.
5. Student will care for the equipment to the extent that no unnecessary
damage is done to the equipment. Student will report any damage to instructor
or technician.
6. Student will be expected to give time and energy to the productions so that each production is a success according to the needs of the class.
7. Student will be expected to discuss printed material hand-outs; information will be given by lecture, discussion, text readings, small-group meetings, video programs, television programming, individual consultations, question and answer periods, laboratory work, and instructor and peer evaluations.

procedures, routing switcher, editing systems, etc.
It is imperative that students participate in all class sessions.
We will not improve if we do not view our previous weeksí work.
Constructive criticism. View the tapes with the following in mind:
1. How can we improve?
2. Pre-production time.
3. Production ( camera angles, distance, shot selection, focus, stability,
smooth pans\tilts, shot length, switching coordination, replays, psa's,
audio quality, graphics, etc.)
4. Post-production of packages. Integration of packages within game.
5. Did game start on time?
6. Was everyone in their position and ready for start of game?
7. Was all equipment tested before game time?
8. Coordination between announcers and control room?
9. Did talent do their homework?
Package policy for sports broadcasting
All students must produce at least two packages for cablecast.
These packages are from 3-5 minutes in length and include talking heads,
b-roll (field footage), interviews, mini-docs, instructional programs,
edited game tapes, and other video seen as appropriate by both the student
and the instructor. I will play examples of previous packages in class
for further clarification.
There is no limit to packages. Do as
many as you like.
There is no particular subject that
you must do a package on.
It can be a sports package (coach, player,
referee, etc.).
Or it can be something of your own choosing. But remember, it
will be cablecast to 450,000 people.
Equipment and Tape Policy
Tape Policy: There will be one VHS tape made of each game.
Equipment Policy: There are various pieces of equipment available for the sports class. We will shoot most of the packages in VHS because there are alot of VHS editing bays and the VHS chip camcorders are very good under low light level conditions. You must reserve the equipment ahead of time and talk with me about your project. I will sign out the equipment and you will co-sign. Please have pre-production forms ready so that you know exactly what you will need for your shoot when you check the equipment out. This alleviates having to go back 2 or 3 times to the check-out counter and ask for something else. It also helps the people behind the counter have a good day!
We will discuss in class the various pieces of equipment available and what you will need on your shoots. Please write down the pertinent information and draw a picture of the equipment you will need. (Visuals are so important!). Draw also all the cables you require and the adapters. Again, we will go over this in class.
When I sign for the equipment I must also sign a pledge to take full
financial responsibility for all equipment checked out. They will come
after me if any equipment is missing or damaged. However, I will definitely
then, come after you. Do you want to graduate? Do you want to see another
day? Then please, sleep with the equipment when it is not being used and
don't abuse it when you are using it.
Thank you very much!
Talent Policy
Requests for games dates must be turned in by all announcing people
to the instructor and the decision about who will announce specific games
will be made by the instructor and his decision is final! The decision
will be made according to many factors, some of which are 1.COMMITMENT
2. Experience 3. Work-ethic/homework 4. Knowledge of game 5. Attitude/ability
to work with others. Most important is the ability to work with others
and do your homework!!!!!
New announcers must do at least two mock broadcasts on tape to showcase their interest and commitment.
