Recent Projects

I am involved in a range of local and national projects related to counseling, multicultural competence, and social justice. In addition to numerous writing and editing projects, I am also currently involved in the following projects (as of January 2009).

Multicultural Counseling and Social Justice Competence Web Tool, Internet
This Web Tool is designed to serve as a resource and learning tool for counselors, students, and educators who are motivated to develop their multicultural and social justice competence. It is important to acknowledge the great and steady contributions of Felicia Tripp, a student in the SFSU Counseling Program, who has worked with me on this project for some time. To explore this extensive web tool, please visit the MCSJ Web Tool.

7 Tepees Youth Program, San Francisco, CA
I am currently finding ways to support 7 Tepees in developing a Transition to Adulthood program for the youth in their who successfully complete high school and are transitioning to college, vocational training or employment. 7 Tepees is a great program and I'd encourage a visit to their website.

Workforce Retention and Resilience Project, New Orleans, LA
This is a large collaborative research project aimed at understanding the stressors and resilience factors of the mental health workforce in, and around, New Orleans post Hurricanes Rita and Katrina. The goals of this project are to provide employers, educators and legislators with information in an effort to help increase retention and wellness among the workforce. This project is centrally coordinated by Sarah Hoffpauir of Louisiana Public Health Institute and includes collaborative efforts across at least four universities and numerous community agencies. Incidentally, for a very powerful look at New Orleans aftermath of the storm, take a look the photographs in George Long's Katrina Show.

Project Homeless Connect, San Francisco, CA
For the past year, I have been volunteering with the Employment Services at Project Homeless Connect in San Francisco. This has given me the opportunity to meet with hundreds of individuals who are struggling daily to find employment, a home, and food. In addition, I am able to get to know professionals working in employment and job placement services and agencies throughout the city. I strongly encourage anyone local to San Francisco to consider volunteering in one of the numerous capacities available in this monumental project. Visit the Project Homeless Connect website for more information.

Society for Counseling Psychology's Committee for Community Engagement, New Orleans, San Francisco, Boston, Toronto, San Diego
This is an effort by SCP (Division 17 of the American Psychological Association) to involve the Society's members in community service during APA Conventions. I served as the co-chair with Dr. Michael Mobley when this originated as a special task group, Stepping Up to the Plate: Giving Back to the Community, and in its first year (2006) was able to provide notable service in New Orleans. In the second year (2007) provided service in San Francisco. The task group was formalized into a committee and is now planning the service events for the 2008 APA Convention in Boston. I now chair the committee and am fortunate to have Dr. Priscilla Dass-Brailsford serve as Chair Elect and Dr. Michael Mobley serve as Past Chair. For more information regarding past events, please visit the SCP Newsletter for Fall 2007 (p. 17-18) and Fall 2006 (p. 15).
