I wrote the linked document below about 10 years ago while sitting on the shores of Deer Lake, Minnesota. My inspiration for this writing was a general background in the physical sciences, computing, virtual reality, and a particular interest in Alan Turing and his seminal paper titled 'Computing Machinery and Intelligence'. I had always been interested in my father's Scientific American magazines and so had read about topics like sub-atomic particle physics, the quantization of space, and other concepts related to the laws of physics. Combining this disparate knowledge with a creative spark related to a virtual reality experiment I had lead at the Institute for Defense Analyses lead me to extend Turing's question of whether machines could think, to whether machines could create something that so far, man had been unable to do, which is create an environment that is indistinguishable from the real world.
