Bridges to Baccalaureate Program

Directed Research Program
Summer 2009
Instructors:  Sally Pasion, SFSU & Chantilly Munson, CCSF
Purpose of the Program: This program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the agency of the Federal government that oversees research in the biomedical sciences. Through the "Bridges to the Baccalaureate" program, the NIH supports partnerships between community colleges and four-year institutions, with the aim of encouraging students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences to earn their Ph.D. degree and become biomedical scientists. As a first step toward this goal, Bridges prepares students to transfer and earn a bachelors degree from a 4-year school. City College of San Francisco and Skyline College offer the “Bridges” program in partnership with San Francisco State University (SFSU). (While participants are encouraged to consider programs at SFSU, students are free to transfer to other 4-year schools.)During the 1st summer in the Program, students participate in 2 activities, the Academic Success and Leadership Workshop and Directed Research: During the 2nd summer in the Program, students participate in Independent Research and Doctoral Prep Workshop. During the Academic Year, activities include a weekly seminar series held at Skyline College and CCSF, independent research, academic tutoring and advising.
