Purpose of the Program: This program is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the agency of the Federal government that oversees research in the biomedical sciences. Through the "Bridges to the Baccalaureate" program, the NIH supports partnerships between community colleges and four-year institutions, with the aim of encouraging students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences to earn their Ph.D. degree and become biomedical scientists. As a first step toward this goal, Bridges prepares students to transfer and earn a bachelors degree from a 4-year school. City College of San Francisco and Skyline College offer the “Bridges” program in partnership with San Francisco State University (SFSU). (While participants are encouraged to consider programs at SFSU, students are free to transfer to other 4-year schools.)During the 1st summer in the Program, students participate in 2 activities, the Academic Success and Leadership Workshop and Directed Research:
- In the 5-day Academic Success and Leadership Workshop held at SFSU, students will discuss and develop their personal strategies for academic success. This workshop will be run by Dr. Frederick Moore, author of “Finding Your North”, a self-help guide to preparing for careers in biomedical science.
- In Directed Research, you will take part in a 7-week class investigation of biological questions in molecular biology and physiology. Directed Research will be held at SFSU and will be run by Dr. Sally Pasion (Biology Department, SFSU) and Dr. Chantilly Munson (Biology Department, CCSF).
- At the conclusion of Directed research, students will prepare a poster of their research and present it at the SFSU Summer Research Symposium held in early August.
- Students will receive support for participation in the summer program.
During the 2nd summer in the Program, students participate in Independent Research and Doctoral Prep Workshop.
- As an Independent Research intern, students conduct a research project under the supervision of a faculty member from SFSU. The process of selecting a faculty mentor is done in consultation between the student and Dr. Steve Weinstein, program co-director, to match student and faculty research interests. Internships run for an 8-week period.
- The Doctoral Prep Workshop at SFSU is designed to help students consider careers in biomedical research. The workshop meets once per week during the 8-week internship.
- At the conclusion of the internship, students give a 10-minute Powerpoint presentation of their research at the SFSU Summer Research Symposium held in early August.
- Students will also present their research at either the SACNAS or ABRCMS national meetings in the fall.
- Students will receive support for participation in the summer program.
During the Academic Year, activities include a weekly seminar series held at Skyline College and CCSF, independent research, academic tutoring and advising.
