About the San Francisco State University Program:
The San Francisco State University (SFSU) O&M Program is one of the oldest in the nation, founded in 1966. The Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Program at San Francisco State University is nationally approved by The Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER). By offering one of the most comprehensive university programs in the country, SFSU prepares O&M specialists to become successful professionals with the skills needed to work with people of any and all ages (infancy through adulthood) who have visual impairments, including those who have multiple disabilities and those from diverse cultural backgrounds.

SFSU offers two program options:

Master of Arts Degree in Special Education (specialization in O&M)

    California Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credential
    in O&M

Students are welcome to enroll in one or both options. The programs overlap significantly, and by enrolling in both options, there are only an additional 2-3 courses (6-9 units) added to the single option.

Students can attend the O&M program on either a full- or part-time basis. Most courses are held in the evenings and on weekends.

SFSU also offers Dual Certification:

Guide Dog Mobility and Orientation & Mobility

In addition to completing one or both of the above options, students may apply to the Guide Dog Mobility Program to earn dual certification. Many of the courses taken in the O&M sequence can be applied toward the guide dog mobility certificate or degree. For more information, click on the Guide Dog Mobility link on the left.

Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Orientation & Mobility

In addition to completing one or both of the above options, students may enroll in the Teacher of the Visually Impaired (VI) Program to earn dual certification and the California Education Specialist's Credential in Visual Impairment. Many of the courses taken in the O&M sequence can be applied toward the VI credential. For more information, click on the Teacher of the Visually Impaired link on the left.
