San Francisco State University is an urban, largely
non-residential campus whose student body reflects the multiethnic,
multinational makeup of the Bay Area and east and west sides of the Pacific
Rim. The Anthropology Department's mission is to provide the student and
university community with the analytical and methodological tools to understand
the nature of our biologically and culturally diverse society and to be able to
work productively in contemporary social and cultural settings. The
Anthropology faculty is dedicated to teaching and to active research in a wide
range of specialties and to preparing students for careers in both academic and
applied fields, such as education, community and international development,
medical research and delivery, government, and private enterprise.

The M.A. Program in
Bioanthropology is designed to provide rigorous training
in biological anthropology with a strong emphasis on the biological sciences. Students
are expected to demonstrate proficiency in all three subfields of anthropology
offered at SFSU (archaeology, biological, and cultural) but the primary
emphasis of the program is biological. The M.A. degree provides preparation for application to a Ph.D.
program in Anthropology (not offered at SFSU). The M.A. degree in Anthropology
may also be appropriate preparation for further study in such fields as law,
medicine, or cultural resource management. Students who have completed their education at the
M.A. level have found employment in cultural resources management (archaeology),
museums, education, and related public service fields. |
