Welcome to the 25th annual Himalaya-Karakoram-Tibet Workshop home page.

For a quarter-century the Himalayan-Karakoram-Tibet Workshop has provided students of the India-Asia collision system a wonderful opportunity for workshop-style discussion with other colleagues working in this region. In 2010, HKT returns to North America for the first time since 1996. The 25th International Workshop will be held from 7-10th June at San Francisco State University, California - please mark your calendar and plan to attend! Following the format of previous workshops, thematic oral and poster sessions will occur within a single venue to avoid the distraction of parallel sessions.

All workshop updates will appear on this web site as soon as they are available. Please e-mail hkt25sf@gmail.com to communicate with the workshop organizers.

    Pre-conference field trip - Saturday-Monday, June 5-7

A three-day field trip to see the geology of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic convergent margin of northern California prior to the main HKT-25 workshop will depart at 8am on Saturday, June 5, from the lobby of the Travelodge San Francisco Airport South. Participants who wish to stay at the Travelodge the night of Friday, June 4, should make reservations directly with the hotel. This hotel offers free transport from San Francisco International Airport and a complimentary continental breakfast.

The field trip will examine the Mesozoic-Cenozoic convergent margin of California, a well-studied example of such systems preserved and exposed by the transition to transform tectonics in the mid-Cenozoic. The field trip will visit world-class exposures of the main components of a convergent margin: accretionary complex, fore-arc basin and magmatic arc and will be lead by local experts over the short distance between the California coast and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Day 1 will focus on the Franciscan accretionary complex in the San Francisco Bay area. It will consist of stops to view classic blueschist melange, pillow basalts and other features, and will also provide ample opportunity for discussion of the younger geology associated with the San Andreas fault. Day 2 will focus on the forearc basin assemblage and will visit well-known outcrops of deepwater deposits of the Great Valley Group along the western margin of California's central valley. Outcrops will include sandstone, mudstone, and conglomeratic facies and will allow examination of a range of deepwater depositional features, such as turbidites, injectites, debris flows, and submarine fan architecture. The final day of the field trip will focus on the Sierra Nevada, where rocks of the Sierra Nevada batholiths and associated metamorphic country rock will be examined. Stops in the Sierra Nevada foothills will provide added opportunities to discuss the long-term evolution of the California convergent margin and the history of various terranes that comprise the region. Following the final geological stop of the third day, participants will return to SF State in time to check-in to on-campus housing and for the icebreaker Monday evening June 7th.

Advance registration and payment are required by the March 1st deadline. Field trip registration includes a field guide, transportation, accommodation, and breakfasts (Sun./Mon.) and lunches (Sat./Sun./Mon.); dinners are separate and to be arranged individually by field trip participants. A minimum of 20 participants is required to run the field trip and refunds will be given during the workshop if the field trip is cancelled because of a lack of interest.

    Post-conference NSF-sponsored Workshop - Friday-Saturday, June 11-12

The post-conference NSF Workshop "Future directions for NSF-sponsored geoscience research in the Himalaya/Tibet" will be held at the Bay Conference Center, Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies. NSF Workshop participants will stay at The Lodge at Tiburon
