Obsidian

Igneous - volcanic

Obsidian is a black-colored volcanic glass. The magma or lava must be cooled instantaneously to produce glass — it is quenched so quickly that there is no time for crystals to grow. A frothy lava rich with gases will produce pumice. Obsidian and pumice are found in the East Sierra Nevada in the Mono Craters/Long Valley region.
