The Last Hurrah Exam:
This exam should take you no more than an hour to finish.There will be two parts: 1) review; and 2) scantron. Each section will be timed. Therefore, don't be late or casual about when you show up for the exam.
For the Review:
You will be handed a box chart with centuries listed in the first section;
another list will have the names of major movements in Jewish Mysticism as
well as the main characters of several programs. You will have to match the
programs and characters to each of the pertinent centuries.
You will also need to know the sephirotic tree as Scholem and Matt have presented
it to you. You will be handed a blank chart and you will have to fill
in each sefirah with the appropriate attribute. In some cases, you may be
asked to specify which patriarch or biblical figure is associated with that
sefirah.
For the Scantron:
You should know well the major tenets of Isaac Luria and Sabbatai Zvi's projects.
You should also know who promoted them and who were their main followers
if those followers contributed to the movement.
You should be able to identify from any of your readings post-Zohar the experiences that were considered important enough for Dan or Scholem to include them.
You should be able to define certain key terms both in Scholem and Dan as well as important and colorful figures mentioned by either author in the assigned essays and tales.
