Week 1 - Jan 28-30 - -- Introduction: Orientation and Overview Of Course

Read: Preface to Wade's Think Musically and Bellman's A Short Guide to Writing About Music ; Roberts' Introduction to Latin Tinge , and Cuellar's "A History of SFSU's Raza Studies" ( http://online.sfsu.edu/~josecuel/a_history.htm ), "SFSU's La Raza Studies Paradigm: A Multidimensional Model for Multiethnic Latin@ Education Into Y2K." Online: Post your introduction on the discussion board.

Research:   conduct a comparative music folklore internet search and make critical notes on your five most interesting findings.

Write:   list of at least ten (the more, the better) assumptions (normally, unstated beliefs) that you bring to this course of study, and make a critical note for each; and list of at least ten tunes/songs that are most significant in your life, and make a critical note for each.

Week 2 - Feb 2-4-6 - Perspectives and Paradigms for our Comparative Study of Musical Folklore De La Raza

Fri - small study group discussion of how to make references to these readings and paradigms in your writings.  

Select your two recordings for comparative review, and decide on the two live performances that you are also reviewing during this course.

Read: Bellman's ""Writing about Music", Wade's "Thinking about Music", Robert's "The Roots" and make a set of notes for each chapter.  

Write: first draft of intro, methods and findings sections of your assumptions essay.

Online: Post a paragraph summary of your critical reading notes for each chapter on Blackboard.

Research: devote at least two hours to your research or community service learning project.   Start a working discography (an annotated list of recordings) and a working bibliography (an annotated list of references) of comparative musical folklore research or community service learning report.

Week 3 - Feb 9-11-13 - Multidimensional Models and Methods for Comparative Music Folklore .

Fri - Small study group discussion of how to make references to these readings and models in your writings

Start your comparative recording review due on March 3 by critically listening again to the two selected Latino music recordings (LPs, CDs or tapes) for your comparative review. Find a "model" music review of a Latino music recording.   Study it as a example to learn more about writing recording reviews.   Outline and first draft your comparative review.

Decide: on the focus of your research or community service learning paper by the end of this week.  

Read: Bellman's ""Writing about Music: By and For Those Who Can't Necessarily Read It" (pp. 21 -38), Wade's "Thinking about Instruments" (pp. 27-55), Robert's "The Foundations" (pp. 24-43)' and make a set of notes for each chapter.  

Research: devote at least two hours to research or community service learning project.

Write: first draft the analysis, summary and conclusions sections of your musical autobiography essay.

Online: Post a paragraph summary of your critical reading notes for each chapter on Blackboard.

Week 4 - Feb 16-18-20 - The Mestizo/Mulatto Raices of Musica Latina: More than Five Centuries of Mixed Musical Heritage .

Fri - small study group discussion of how to make references to these readings and presentations in your writings

Select two live performances to review as soon as possible. Find and analyze a live performance review as a model for your (three typed, doubled-spaced pages) comparative live music performance review. Your performance review is due on March 19.

Start documenting references (persons, books, articles, recordings, and reviews) for your research paper.

Read Bellman's ""Writing Music Analysis" (pp. 39-50), Wade's "Thinking about Time" (pp. 56-80), Robert's "The Tango Rage" (pp. 44-75) and make a set of notes for each chapter.  

Research:   devote at least two hours to research or community service learning project.

Online: Post a paragraph summary of your critical reading notes for each chapter on Blackboard.

Write: final draft of your neatly typed double-spaced "musical autobiography" due next week.

Week 5 - Feb 23-25-27 - Canciones, Danzas, Plenas, Sones, Tangos and Orquestas de Cuerdas (Traditional String Groups and Genres) de los 1910s-1920s .

Read Bellman's ""Three Kinds of Practical Writings" (pp 51-69), Wade's "Thinking about Pitch" (pp. 81-107), Robert's "The 1930s.   Rumba Era"(pp. 76-99) and make a set of notes for each chapter.  

Research:   devote at least two hours to research or community service learning project.

Write: second draft of your assumptions essay's intro, methods and findings sections.

Finalize your first comparative recording review due next week.

Online: Post a paragraph summary of your critical reading notes for each chapter on Blackboard.

Attend:   live performance for comparison review and make critical notes.

Research:   devote at least two hours to research or community service learning project.

Write: first draft of your comparative live performance review.
