Spring 2009 DAI 627 Virtual Worlds Design Class Startup Info

Greetings and Happy New Year!!
Here is the startup information for the class:

1. Get a Blogger blog for this class.
• Yes, it must be a Blogger blog and yes it must be for JUST this class.
• You must use your sfsu email address in connection with this blog.
• You must make the address for the blog "dai627firstnamelastinitial". So if your name is John Doe, your blog address would be "dai627johnd". If that's already taken, start adding subsequent letters from your last name until it works, e.g. "dai627johndo".
• The displayed title of the blog must include the text: "DAI627 Virtual Worlds Design" and your name. Everything else, e.g. the template, is up to you.
• Email me with your blog address as soon as you have created it.
In case you need help, here are some resources:

2. Get set up with ToonTown, the first virtual world that we will work with:
• Go to http://play.toontown.com
• Download and install the application
• Run the application and then sign up for a free account.
• Create your “Toon” avatar and begin your training tasks (these are given to you by in-world characters).
• For support, see the ToonTown WIKI at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toontown_Online
and http://www.disneyonlineworlds.com/index.php/Toontown

3. Get the simple 3D modeler we will be using (unless you already use a better one):
• Go to http://www.wings3d.org
• Download the current stable (not the beta) version of Wings3D and the pdf manual.
• Install the software on your laptop/home computer and place the manual or a shortcut to it where you can easily reach it on your desktop.
There are also tutorials on and linked to the site.

4. Student Support Forum on iLearn
Our class site on iLearn is set up for an open forum. You can create new topics or respond to questions/issues raised by other students. This is how you can help each other master these various apps/worlds. NOTE: If you figure out how to do something that others might value or find a tutorial or site that offers good tips, please publish it here under a new topic. That way the class advances its collective intelligence. Sharing useful information is a good instinct for future collaborative work!!
