Article 1-İİ Barnard, Nicolas. PE lobby warns of threat to literacy.

İİİİİİİİİİİ İİİİİ Times Educational Supplement, Issue 4273, pg 5. (May 22, 1998)

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ The article, written by Barnard, was about the downfalls about losing Physical Education is our curriculum. The article states ìnot only are we removing one of the most influential aspects of our lives, but we are losing part of the literacy aspect as well.î Physical Education not only develops motor skills, but according to the article it develops literacy and numeracy skills, in addition to cognitive and academic achievement.İ The reason why they are cutting back is because of the low literacy and numeracy test scores on standardized tests.İ At the same time, the districtís decisions of cutting back Physical Education, has researched that the links between sport and early years learning suggests that physical activity boosts every students academic achievement. İIn conclusion, the article does not believe we should cut Physical Education from the teaching curriculum.

Connection to Literacy

İİİİİİİİİİİ The connection to literacy of this article was about how we can connect the reading, writing, and arithmetic known as the 3Rís to physical education.İ In physical education, we have the ability to use all three of the test related components to teach students at a young age.İ Physical Education has the ability to turn all kids onto the use of literacy through physical activity because most children love to play and be physically active.İ We can play number games, reading and comprehension activities that build literacy skills.İ As educators can use physical activity to have them write free writes about their own perspectives, subjects of the lesson, related topics, or any current events and issues related to Physical Education.

Significance

İİİİİİİİİİİ The significance of this article relates to my development as a teacher in ways to enhance literacy in physical education. The article opens my eyes to the different areas a good physical education teacher can make, so they can even have a greater chance on improving the cognitive development on studentís lives.İ We as physical education teachers can build more than just motor skills, in fact, we can develop literacy and numeracy skills as well.İ This literacy and cognitive type of development is what we are trying to steer in the direction of health, fitness, and wellness.İ This new type of style of teaching is what the new and upcoming teachers are being taught to do.İ For example, we are trying to teach at least one class a week inside a classroom and teach about heart rate, metabolic rate, nutrition, disease prevention, and other health related items.

Article 2-İ Moriarty, H. İSpellbind.

Times Educational Supplement, Issue 4391, pg 12. (August 25, 2000)

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ This article is about how Ministers who are obsessed with literacy believe that the way to enhance their literacy education is through physical education.İ The article stated that Ministers believe that when young people leave school and they do not have a firm grasp of literacy, they are at an extreme disadvantage for the rest of their lives.İ The use of teaching literacy (spelling) through Physical Education, Art, and Home Economics can be beneficial to teaching literacy at any age.İ All physical educators have to do is incorporate spelling, reading, writing, and comprehension into physical activity which is something students enjoy.İ

Connection to Literacy

İİİİİİİİİİİ The article has a couple of connections to literacy and Physical Education.İ For instance, one connection is the ability to learn to spell and explain the different types of muscles and uses in the body.İ For example, the students will have to spell Quadriceps and have to describe why we use this muscle.İ Another type of connection it has to literacy is that the students will learn to cognitively develop and understand a variety of motor skills by the use of spelling and literacy.

Significance

İİİİİİİİİİİ This article will actually help my development as a teacher because it gives me another aspect or way to use literacy in my classroom.İ The use of have the students spell and pronounce the uses of different activities will give my students a better cognitive understanding of the different units that I will be teaching.İ For example, by having the students actually spell the word correctly, like deltoids or the correct grammar usage of the bounce pass or even the correct spelling and use of the metabolic rate will help their learning tremendously.

Article 3 -İ Harrison, J., Hillier, R., and Wilkinson, C.İ Improving the computer literacy

of İpreservice teachers.İ Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.İ Volume 69, Issue 5. pg 10-16 (May/June, 1998).

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ The article was about using and building computer literacy in physical education and other classes for up and coming teachers.İ The article explains how to choose particular software, the use of internet for assignments, telecommunications, in using different web sites, and creating web pages in the classroom.İ The article makes some great points on assigning class projects by using the internet; to having them create their own web pages, and having them choose good software.İ The article also explains different tutorial programs and the development of computer literacy in the classroom can enhance the motivation of learning. In addition, the article found that having class once a week in the lab for two hours, the students learned hands on and lecture was kept to a minimum.İ The students learned about the useful information on fitness and health issues via email, bulletin boards, and chat groups.İ Creating web pages was another aspect the students created so the Physical Education teachers can create a link to the schools home Web page, so the teacher can advertise ìphysical education activities, studentís work, and show photos and results of tournament playî.

Connection to Literacy

İİİİİİİİİİİ The connection to literacy the article has developed was to show the importance in developing computer literacy among up and coming teachers.İ The connection is the wave of the future and we as teachers need to develop computer literacy, so we can teach our students or even use it to enhance our own technological educational background.İ By learning to connect with technology our students will be a lot more educated in our subject areas like physical education.İ İİİİ

İİİİİİİİİİİ

Significance

İİİİİİİİİİİ The significance of this article has helped me understand the importance of having computer literacy as a teacher.İ As an up and coming teacher, we need to have as many resources in our perspective fields as possible, especially, in physical education, where we can reach our students through a vast variety of education from the use of computer literacy.İ For example, by teaching us how to choose good software, telecommunicate, and create web pages, we will be more available for our students.İ I felt that with the use of blackboard this year, this style of teaching along with the lectures really enhanced my education.İ I would love to include this style of teaching into my physical education class.İ I would have my students surf the web and look up games from other cultures or develop class assignments that the students will have to turn in electronically which from experience is very educational.

Article 4-İ Buell, C. and Whittaker, A. Enhancing content literacy in physical education.

Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Volume 72, Issue 6.

pg 32-37 (August, 2001).

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ ìContent Literacy can be defined as the ability to use reading and writing for the acquisition of new content in a given discipline.İ Such ability includes three principal cognitive components: general literacy skills, content specific literacy skills (such as map reading) and prior knowledge of content.îİ In Physical Education, content literacy is content specific and is not to be combined with content knowledge because it is not what you know about the subject.İ Content literacy is the skills needed to develop, understand, and reflect on content, so knowing how to use reading, writing, and thinking skill are must be already taught.İ The article also describes how content literacy maximizes the skill acquisition.İ For example once the students have learned the technical terms and language of sports, fitness, and movements their can use this language to improve their performance by researching magazines, articles, and the web.İ By having the students learn in this particular environment, they can enhance their reading, writing, and comprehension skills without them knowing.İ In conclusion, the article states that because this takes some time out of developing their movement skills, but by having them cognitively learn about the activity and develop literacy aspects, the students will be more apt to be involved lifelong because of the prerequisite tools of content literacy.

Connection to Literacy

The article is connected to literacy in many ways.İ In fact, the article states that physical education needs to focus a lot more on teaching literacy content, along with teaching movement and skill acquisition.İ The article connects the different educational tools that we as physical education teachers can use.İ We can use journal reflections for feedback on different quality and in depth student ideas, and they can make discuss their own strategies, performances, and the connections they can make in their lifeís experiences.İ In addition, to their journal writing they can be brief so instruction of motor skill can also take place.İ The article also states the ability to teach different graphs and ways to solve specific problems, so the students can relate it to real life situations.İ

The article also discussed other ideas for implementing reading and writing in physical education, by analyzing videos of games, using judgment forms, completing peer observations, designing new and modified games, creating posters or other visuals accompanied by written explanations. İİBefore our students can perform all of these activities, our students have to have content literacy in Physical Education.

Significance

İİİİİİİİİİİ This article plays a real significant role in my development as a teacher because I now know to teach content literacy first, rather then just the show and tell in my instruction.İ The article has given me plenty of resources to use in developing literacy in my class.İ I never thought of teaching the literacy terms before developing motor skills, so they will be able to understand what it is I am talking about.İ In addition the article has taught me how my students can actually understand the activities more by understanding the content literacy first.İ In addition, by having content literacy, I strongly agree that this will develop life long activities because I can relate to this in my daily life.İ For example, I would not be interested in tennis, volleyball, badminton, ectÖ if I did not understand the rules, literacy terms, or even understand the game play without understanding the literacy content first.

Article 5-İ Rajkowski, P.İ Emerging issues in South Australian schools in health and

physical education.İ Primary Educator, Vol. 2 Issue 4 p 1-12.İ (August, 1996).

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ This article was about the schoolís curriculum development in the South America and the steps they take to develop this curriculum.İ The curriculum is based on the feedback that they receive from teachers on monthly bases on issues that affect health and physical education related issues.İ The article is broken up into two case study issues that focus on emerging issues and the other study shows how both the curriculum officers and teachers are still trying to solve the on going problems that exists in the curriculum.İ The new emphasis on physical education is the intergrading of holistic health, more literacy content, gender and cultural issues, health care along with environmental education, and harm minimization (drug, sexual abuse, and safe practices).İ The article states that teachers came up with three key principles of modeling and strategizing.İ One aspect is to have the students actively participating in a brainstorming, collaborated work, debriefing, and group thinking activities for the use of literacy in the content area.İ Also, by including a diverse group of written resources that support the resources and literacy content, it will also enhance the richness of learning.İ İLastly, in addition to the diverse groups the class has to be supportive of one another in order for students to learn.İ The article also investigates in literacy in health and physical education by using critical literacy which is really important in the development of a literacy curriculum. İCritical literacy challenges the view points that authors, artists, or anything published have made.İ By having the students develop critical literacy it will enable them not to take the sides that the writerís make.İ The students actually dissect the information and analyze using their creative minds.İ But as a team building exercise teachers must use texts that will be assessable for all literacy ability students in order to build support in physical education.

Connection to Literacyİİ

İİİİİİİİİİİ The article gave a good example of a different type of literacy approach to teaching.İ It was funny to finally get to the literacy aspect of the article, but well worth in the information that was gained in the beginning.İ I decided to include that portion into my summary.İ The literacy portion of this article talked about critical literacy and incorporating it into physical education.İ The article states to pick out visuals, texts, videos, ectÖ that fit every level of studentís caliber to literacy because we as educators want to build supportive environments.İ The idea behind critical literacy is to develop a brainstorm or a dissection of a piece literacy which will not take the authors side to everything we read, listen, or see.İ For example, an author will mostly give an opinion about subject and the author wants you to take a side.İ With critical literacy the students will work together in groups and decide on what their very own opinion will be about.İ All of the aspects coordinate as a part of developing literacy in physical education.

Significance

İİİİİİİİİİİ I believe that this article is significant to my own teaching in Physical Education because it has taught me another aspect of incorporating literacy into my lessons.İ With this style of teaching I donít have to teach my students how do develop motor skills, but instead they will develop it on their own by using critical thinking.İ I would be able to incorporate signs that the media produces, the advertisements that are made by billion dollar companies, teach about nutrition and cardio vascular health.İ Using this approach and style of teaching will actually blend in with more of their daily lifestyles.İ I will also teach about how the celebrityís achieved their bodyís and how the media plays a huge role in contribution to eating disorders, sex, race, and gender issues and harmful stereotypes that are wrong ideologies in our society today.

Lesson Plan Critiques

İİ

Critique 1 - Aerobics/Dance Project

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ http:// www.pecentral.org

İSummary

İİİİİİİİİİİ This lesson is about creating cooperative games in the physical education class.İ The students will work together in groups of 3-5 and develop a dance or aerobic routine which will be performed within the week.İ The students will use the rubric and description of the project as a way to develop an assessment and literacy skills.İ Each student will present to the entire class using their own music and moves.İ The students will also write out each of their routines and steps as another form of the development to literacy.

Positive Aspects

İİİİİİİİİİİ This lesson has tons of positive aspects in it.İ It has cooperation, unity, the teaching to California standards of physical education, and most of all popular culture.İ The use of their creative minds will have to be in use and the use of the assessment sheet (Rubric) will be the most useful portion of the lesson.

Development Areas

İİİİİİİİİİİ I think one area of the lesson that might be affected would be the full class participation of the shy and passive students.İ These students might not be apt to perform or even participate not because they do not want to but because of the cultural background.İ For example, some Asian students are taught to be passive and only talk when spoken too.İ Coming from an Asian ethnicity, I can say this is a typical Asian costume.İ

Adaptation to the Classroom

İİİİİİİİİİİ I would make a minor addition to the rubric and state full participation during practice and performance time.İ I will do this so the typical shy and passive students will experience getting out of the passive personality.İ I can only hope that this does not make the situation worse and have them dislike physical education for this particular activity.İ I believe it can actually go both ways, but for the most part it will be a positive experience.İ The rubric and having them come up with writing down their own steps and giving their steps specific names will develop their literacy skills. Finally, I will have them write a reflection about the good and bad aspects that occurred during the unit.

Critique 2 -İİİİ Fitness Fun with Mats

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ http:// www.pecentral.org

Cirriculum Guid.doc

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ This lesson plan deals with cooperative games and team and individual problem solving.İ I feel that physical education is more then just teaching sport skills. This lesson is about working in groups of five to six students and incorporating folded mats.İ One of the objectives of the lesson is to travel across the gym floor without stepping off of the mat.İ The students have to develop ways to work together without even touching the floor.İ The second objective is to unfold the mat without stepping off and then folding it back with the same objectives.İ Encourage others to use the ideas that other students are using but add on to the ideas.

Positive Aspects

İİİİİİİİİİİ The positive aspects of this lesson are to develop group cohesiveness. I feel that physical education is more about learning to work well with others and working together to solve different problems in life.İ It is important to learn how to handle problems and learn to solve them without stressing out.İ Another positive aspect is that there are no super stars or star athletes in cooperative games.İ Everyone is on an even playing field.İ The key to winning is working together and that is a tough aspect to teach.

Development Areas

İİİİİİİİİİİ One development idea is to create a theme or give a story behind the objective to move the mats.İ This will develop a little more reasoning and challenges that the students can bring to their imaginations.İ

Adaptations to this Lesson

Sticking to the theme of the mat game, I will give an objective like crossing the river and the students are traveling on rafts.İ The objective is to get across without using ors.İ The second activity I would call the swamp.İ I would create an imaginary swamp filled with alligators and the only way to save your foot will be to not step off the mat while folding and unfolding it.İ At the end of the lesson the students will reflect in their journals on what types of strategies that were used in accomplishing their tasks.İ

Critique 3 - Cooperative Handball

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ http:// www.pecentral.org

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ The lesson involves team unity and cooperation in order to reach a specific goal.İ The cooperative handball activity involves ten to sixteen players on both sides.İ There is a goalie on the side of each goal and the first team to get it to their goalie wins a point.İ Once the ball is caught the team can not move and must pass the ball to another teammate.İ If the ball is dropped or deflected the call is turned over and changes possession.İ A nerf ball and jerseys will be used.İ One suggestion was to have extra points for the team that passes four times in a row.

Positives

İİİİİİİİİİİ This activity builds a lot of team unity and togetherness.İ The activity brings the ability to pass, catch, and quick problem solving skills.İ I feel the most beneficial part of this lesson is that everyone is involved and active.İ If everyone is engaged in activity, there is less time to be off task and the development of positive self esteem should be occurring.

Development Aspects

İİİİİİİİİİİ The one development aspect of this lesson would be to include more balls to the chances of more participants will be greater.İ Instead of one student holding the ball two students will be holding the ball.İ The reason is just to have more students involved with moving and physical activity.

Adaptation

I would include this lesson plan to my classroom by also incorporating literacy into the lesson.İ I will have the students describe in their journals the problem solving skills to the game and what strategies they used to get the ball into their goalies hands.İ I would also develop a critical analysis group discussion of the aspects of the game and have they come up with ways to enhance the activity.

Critique 4- Flying Disc Horseshoe

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ http:// www.pecentral.org

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ The lesson is about teaching accuracy and composure.İ It is a lesson that creates control of the Frisbee and enables the students to work for a goal.İ The students will be partnered up into groups of fours with two hula hoops ten feet apart from each other.İ The studentís objective is to get throw the Frisbees into the hoops.İ The scoring will be 2 full points if the whole Frisbee is in the hoop and one point if the whole Frisbee is partially in the hoop.İİ The students will keep tally marks and individual scores will be kept.

Positive Aspects

İİİİİİİİİİİ The positive aspects of this lesson plan are that it gives the students an objective to shoot for and builds an ideal lesson of horse shoes.İ This lesson teaches control and accuracy, along with the idea to equalize the playing field, so no one is the dominant player.

Development Areas

İİİİİİİİİİİ This lesson is pretty good, but there has to be more than just this activity.İ I think there has to be another lead up activity after the students practice this one horseshoe Frisbee game. For example, we can increase the height by adding basketball hoops, so the students aim for the square and get it into the basketball hoop.

Adaptation to This Lesson

İİİİİİİİİİİ I will adapt to this lesson by using this in one of my accuracy building Frisbee units.İ This is a great lead up activity to Frisbee golf as it states and the cues that this lesson has a pretty good.İ I will include bigger groups because I have fifty students in most of my classes.İ After they receive enough practice time I will set a few more parameters.İ For example, hitting the backboard of a basketball hoop from the various lines of the court, and also set ricochet shots off the wall and into the target.

Critique 5 ñ Rainy Day Football

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ http:// www.pecentral.org

Summary

İİİİİİİİİİİ The lesson on rainy day football is to develop the understanding of literacy content in football.İ This lesson will be great to evaluate each studentís content knowledge of the football unit.İ Like I mentioned in one of my article summaries above about literacy content, this activity is a great example of gaining content knowledge and an understanding of how to play the game. With this tool, the students are more apt to enjoying and playing football as a life long activity. This lesson is about understanding the rules of football while at the same time creating a cohesive activity.İ The equipment needed to play the game will be a large sheet of butcher paper or poster board, so they create a playing field.İ Also needed are two dice for every group of four, miniature football or coin to use as a game marker.İ Play starts at the 20 yard line.İ Each player takes a turn rolling the dice.İ

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ Scores are as follows:

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 2= 5 yard lossİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 7= 3 yard gainİİİİİİİİİİİİİ

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 3= 5 yard gainİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 8= interception

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 4= incomplete passİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 9= 9 yard gain

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 5= 10 yard gainİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 10= 10 yard gain

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 6= 6 yard gainİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 11=20 yard gain

İİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİİ 12= fumble

The students keep track of the total yards, turnovers, and points earned.İ Another assessment tool is to have the students watch a football game on television and record the how many plays and first downs they scored in a quarter.

Positive Aspects

The positive aspect that the lesson has is the ability to develop content literacy while being actively engaged in an activity.İ The students will gain knowledge of the subject and develop an understanding of how the game of football is played.İ I like the fact that the students work together to create their own playing field, and develop literacy and numeracy skills as well.İ At the same time the students can count the odds and learn about statistics together at the same time, and they will not even know they are actually learning about statistics because it is fun.

Development Areas

İİİİİİİİİİİ I feel that there are no areas that need development because the lesson is well thought of and planned.İ The students are learning and engaged in some type of literacy lesson.İ In addition to the area of content literacy it is plus.

Adaptation to the Classroom

İİİİİİİİİİİ I will teach this lesson in the way it was designed.İ I would just have everyone develop their own football stadiums, so they can use it at home.İ I feel that this is going to a successful unit because it keeps the students actively involved and participating.İ They will learn to understand the game of football and gain content literacy from this whole activity.İ The activity works in a variety of areas in literacy which can be language, reading, writing, interpreting or comprehending information, and developing football content in literacy.
