CFS 349 Mid-Term Project

  Spring, 2002

Your mid-term project is to design a play house for two children, girls ages eight and five. You have been commissioned to do this project by the children's wealthy eccentric uncle. He is a great fan of Richardsonian Romanesque (1870-1895) architecture* especially the Amelia S. Given Library in Mt. Holly Springs, PA. He would like you to commune with the  spirit of the builders (James T. Steen from Pittsburgh), either through a spiritual medium or through research, and design a structure that they would have created given the following parameters and constraints:

The grading sheet below will be turned in with your assignment.

Other comments:

*"The style was named for Henry Hobson Richardson (1838-1886). It is a revival style based on French and Spanish Romanesque precedents of the 11th century. (Romanesque preceded Gothic in European architecture.) Richardson's style is characterized by massive stone walls and dramatic semicircular arches, and a new dynamism of interior space. Continuity and unity are keynotes of Richardson's style. The Richardsonian Romanesque eclipsed both the IInd Empire Baroque and the High Victorian Gothic styles; the style had a powerful effect on such Chicago architects as Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, and influenced architects as far away as Scandinavia." http://infoeagle.bc.edu/bc_org/avp/cas/fnart/fa267/ransom.html

bulletThe footprint of the building should be no larger than 120 square feet.
bulletStandard materials should be used (i.e., 2x4 lumber, 4'x8' plywood) in the construction.
bulletThe structure should be constructed to withstand earthquakes, as it will be built in California.
bulletThe skeleton of the building should be western platform frame construction using wood.
bulletThe foundation should be either pier and beam or slab.
bulletThe site is in the aunt's back yard and is flat.
bulletThe roof should be gable or hip (not flat).
bulletDetails are essential (i.e., Stained glass windows, appropriate hardware, organic ornament).
bulletThe exterior should be stucco or wood.

Cost is no object. This is to be a work of art that children can enjoy.

You will draw a floor plan, a roof plan, four exterior elevations, an isometric detail showing the construction of the floor, walls and roof and one other drawing that emphasizes a particularly interesting feature of your design. This last drawing can be any type you choose (i.e., another isometric, a perspective, and a section) Use 1/2" scale for the drawings. The uncle needs to be convinced that you know what you are doing, so label all the parts in the isometric drawing. Include all necessary details and measurements so that your drawings could be used to build this playhouse. Submit your drawing on one page as a blue line copy. Include a border line and title block.
