The Garage

Automatic door opener is essential

Switch should be by entry to house

Manual control is also necessary

Large enough to allow 43" on each side of car and one end

48-60" is needed for transfer maneuver

A trapeze can be used for transfer

Attached or covered passage way

Front Entry (36" wide)

Outside area should be 60"x60" )

Slip resistant floor, Ample roof overhang

Small shelf, 36-39" high on latch side

Light switch near door handle

Mats low & no sliding or recessed

One key for deadbolt & door latch

Uses one hand & little strength

Electric locks also recommended

Mail slot w/ basket inside (36-42" h)

Kick plate 12-18" high on push side

"D" handle 8 8"from hinge side

Minimum threshold -1/4" maximum

Install lever handles, push-bars, or U-shaped pull handles instead of round doorknobs.

Use doors that are lightweight.

Make sure the door can be opened and closed with a minimum of five pounds of force.

Install front-door peep holes at two levels

so that people who are standing or sitting can see arriving guests before opening the door. To accommodate people in wheelchairs, peepholes should be located 36-45 inches above the floor.

Storm doors should be eliminated when possible

Raised identifying numbers 60" high

At least 2" high for close viewing

Latch side space is needed so wheel- chairs will not interfere with door swing

Vestibules

48" long if both doors swing out

Door swing must be accommodated if one swings inward

Both doors should not swing inward

Interior Doors

Clear space of 32"

Curled lever handles

Kick plated of metal or plastic

Light switch inside door at 36" (ht.)

Swing of door should not interfere with wheelchair

If a door is not essential, remove it.
