CFS 200, Introduction and Professional Communications in AID

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to communication techniques for apparel and interior design professionals. Problem solving techniques using rapid visualization and computers for concept development and presentations.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

· To introduce students to the following design communication skills:

Rapid visualization/quick sketch
bulletDrafting and Lettering
bulletComputer aided drafting
bulletPresentation media
bulletModels

· To give students an understanding of how these communication skills are used in the AID disciplines

· To demonstrate the tools used in the various communication methods

· To provide an opportunity to experiment with the communication methods and their tools

· To present the growing need for computer skills in the AID disciplines and to introduce the following computer programs:

bulletAutoCAD (Drafting software)
bulletPowerPoint (Presentation software)
bulletAdobe Photoshop (Rendering software)
bulletMicrosoft word and Specification writing software

COURSE OUTLINE:

I. Rapid visualization/quick sketch

II. Drafting and Lettering

III. Computer aided drafting

Evaluation:

bulletQuick sketch tablet containing at least 42 (six per week) drawings done outside of class time.
bulletLettering tablet containing 10 examples of practice lettering done outside of class.
bulletFloor plan of efficiency apartment with 2 elevations or fashion assignment (flats).
bulletPrint out of design using MS paint or other raster-based software illustrating a design concept.
bulletPrint out using AutoCAD or other vector-based program illustrating a design concept.
bulletDevelopment of an AID 200 portfolio with the following components:
bullet1. Basic resume
bullet2. 10 of the best quick sketch examples
bullet3. 2 of the best lettering examples
bullet4. Paint program print out preferably in color
bullet5. CAD example printed
bullet6. Print of PowerPoint slides
bullet7. Explanations of each of the projects included
