COLOR AND PERSONALITY

(a la Faber Birren)

RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE. BROWN

RED

"If you love red, you are an extrovert and struggle ardently to overcome your natural timidity. Others of your hue are Cellini, Villon, Lord Byron, Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. You are vigorous, impulsive, courageous and given to action. Deep sympathy lies within you, and you could bleed for humanity. Life means a lot to you; you want your existence packed with thrilling events. Red puts you at the mercy of life, and people at the mercy of life either miss it or surmount it. You had better marry someone of your own hue, or someone orange. You could get along with a green personality, but a blue one would be liable to heckle you."

ORANGE

You are a person to be envied. Amongst your type was F. D. Roosevelt, Falstaff, P. T. Barnum and Mark Twain. You have enviable taste in food, and make a true gourmet. You like to make special cakes and special cocktails so that all your friends will rave! In your eagerness to attract others to your side, and to be attractive, and to please, you are likely to neglect the spiritual values of life. You are at ease with saints and sinners! You have great fluidity of speech, a big smile and engaging laugh! You want to make people cherish you, for you hate to be alone. Your sense of humor could be perfected through more training; it is naturally quick anyhow. The world likes people of your hue! You make an ideal bachelor, but you could marry one of your own color and go merrily through life! For relaxation to mind and soul, a blue type would be best of all for you."

YELLOW

"Pick yellow, and you are intellectual, an idealist, fit company for Buddha, Confucius, Spinoza and Kant. Extremely pure in type, you have a high mind, but not that of a dreamer. You have grand ideas, meticulously shaped, and perfectly designed to do for the world and for people. You long for the profound admiration of others, you are a mental lone wolf; you are a safe friend and a reliable confidant. You are exacting of others, and a born Evangelist. As a philosopher you love others. You could marry almost any color type and be content. Your own hue, and purple, are best, however."

GREEN

"If you love green, you will be in company with Shakespeare, Anatole France, and Will Rogers. Yours is a good mind, smooth and amiable. Because your mind is clear and without prejudices, you have trouble seeking out the permanent values in life. It is so easy for you to fall in love. Your fancies will be attracted to many rather than a few. You want money. You are courageous but never reckless. Don't neglect the natural beauty of your mind. Try to be understanding rather than merely educated. Your name might not get into the encyclopedia, but people will love you once they know you. Green personalities make good husbands and wives, because they get along with any mate. Red would be your best choice; the courage you lack might lead you merrily into the world which you adore."

BLUE

"Blue is the choice of the introvert and the natural born conservative. Most Republicans are blue, as were Coolidge, Washington, Franklin and Lindberg. You are sensitive to others. When you sin your conscience bothers you but you will sin just the same. You are cautious in dress, word and action. You are a born executive. What troubles you most is your inability to let go. Stupidity annoys you as much as superior intelligence. You make a perfect bosom friend, and a safe mate is found in your own color type or in green. However, if a male you are likely to choose a red or orange maiden, because your dormant emotions crave stimulation. Then after marriage you are likely to want to change this charming red or orange girl, and ruin everything."

PURPLE

"If you love purple your characteristics are unusual and exclusive. Choose pure purple and you are a mystery to yourself as well as to others. You will keep company with Voltaire, Pasteur, Jefferson and Poe. Artistic people favor this color, and deserve it in as much as their minds are in general of uncommon stamp. Here genius is often found, but genius that never promotes itself. One of their greatest charms lies in the sublime quality of their minds: an abiding wisdom which they never attempt to force on others. They are easy to live with. They don't bother their mates by being too impulsive like the red personalities, nor are they too straight laced like the blue ones. Yellow makes an ideal mate for purple, however, almost any type will do. There is some-thing divine in this hue, something to be cultivated and explored."

BROWN

"If you choose brown you are substantial, dependable and steady. You keep company with Rabelias, Dickens, Darrow. You are conservative by nature, rather than by taste. You don't like impulsiveness or show. People could lend you money and not have to worry. As an epicure, you like good, plain food. You buy things on the basis of quality. People call you wise more through the way you act than through what you know. You think that conservatism is humanity's chosen virtue. You are the rock of Gibraltar that cannot be budged. Cultivate your mind and try to stimulate it a bit. You make an ideal partner for one who would appreciate you. The orange and green personality type would suit you best."
