Twin Beds
  • Twin (also known as "Single") is a narrow bed that's easy to make and can fit almost anywhere.
  • Overall: 39" wide x 75" long" long
  • Approx. width per person: 39"
  • Because of its small size it will fit easily into smaller bedrooms.
  • Sheets are less expensive than for other size beds.

Twin Beds
  • Twin Extra Long is often used in college dorm rooms and is 5" longer than a standard twin.
  • Bedding may be harder to find and available only a limited variety of patterns.
  • Overall: 39" wide x 80" long.

Full
  • Double beds (also known as Full) are just 15" wider than a Single/Twin bed.  Each person has only 27" of width (vs. 39" for one person in a Twin bed). Too, a Double bed is only 75" long which may be too short for some adults.
  • Overall: 54" wide x 75" long

Queen
  • Queen beds are 6" wider and 5" longer than a Double size bed.
    • A Queen is a good choice for guest rooms and smaller master bedrooms, and for couples who prefer close quarters.
  • Overall: 60" wide x 80" long.
  • Approx. width per person: 30, "9" less than a standard Twin bed.

Standard King
  • Standard King beds are about 18" wider though the same length as a Queen bed.
    • Has one mattress and two half-width box springs to be more manageable when moving.
  • Overall: 76" wide x 80" long
  • The Standard King size bed is the widest mattress commonly available. The 80" length comfortably accommodates most people. Sheets are easy to find and are generally labeled simply "King".

California King
  • 12" wider than a Queen but a few inches longer.
  • Also known as a "Western King" and bedding may be labeled either "California King" or "Western King".
  • Has one mattress and two half-width box springs to be more manageable when moving.
  • Overall: 72" wide x 84" long

Space Needs
  • 3 feet between the bed and a wall or other vertical surface is generous.
  • Two feet between a bed and another low surface—such as another bed—allows minimum room to stand and make the bed.
