Hunters Point Naval Shipyard

This summer, San Francisco and the Navy were going forward with an agreement to transfer Parcel A of the Hunters Point Shipyard to the city. The first transfer is part of the city's plan to develop the shipyard for housing and retail. Parcel A is considered the cleanest of the six parcels that are ultimately to be transferred to city control. However, grave concern remains for Parcel E and F. In addition to cleaning and servicing military ships, the Navy conducted nuclear research, radiation abatement research on the site. But the military is unclear of how pervasive the contamination is.

The Navy has spent $200 million to clean up the shipyard but has yet to complete the task. With the transfer of Parcel A, the Navy will have to conduct more analysis of the grounds in Parcel E and a complete analysis of the entire base to determine the level of radiation contamination. The transfer also allows watchdog groups such as ARC Ecology to help plan the clean-up effort.
