While I had teaching experience before I came to the program, and saw my students improve in my classes, I was still curious about the underlying principles of effective instruction. Searching for answers led me to SFSU's program, which taught me the necessary connection between informed theory and classroom practices. That experience has been not only to my benefit, but also to my students' benefit.

I’ve decided to split my time between teaching in the classroom and working with principals and teachers at elementary school sites in Oakland. My multi-level work has helped me get a broad perspective of teaching—I understand the environment and challenges our students overcame in K-12 to get to our classrooms in college. The postsecondary reading certificate program has helped me have a stronger theoretical and practical background in reading than most of the K-12 teachers I work with! |

The reading certificate has been a great asset in my teaching, not only at the developmental level but at the 1A/114 and 1B/214 level as well. So many of the techniques and theories I learned can be connnected to the teaching of writing and literature at any level! |

Returning to graduate school and learning how to hone my natural teaching abilities has been the second most satisfying event in my life. The first is unreservedly given to every day that I get to teach and meet with my students. Teaching is an art that lets me utilize my ten years of business experience and my passion for reading and writing. The reading certificate taught me to see the destination in the „big picture‰, and I plan the journey towards that end and construct a well paved road for my students to travel down. Every moment in and out of the classroom I draw my own classes at SFSU. http://www.smccd.net/accounts/morganr |

Although I have always recognized the connection between reading and writing, and have used reading extensively in my writing classes, the postsecondary reading certificate program gave me the practical tools and theoretical understanding necessary to help me teach those students who are not proficient readers. It was especially intriguing and interesting to learn about those things that good readers do, unthinkingly, and learn how to transfer those skills in a more conscious way to less skilled readers. |

What I learned while earning the Certificate in Teaching Postsecondary Reading was invaluable to me as a lecturer at SFSU, particularly teaching integrated reading and writing classes. And now that I’m teaching reading full time, I am even more thankful for the comprehensive overview in reading pedagogy and learning theory, which I draw on every day to facilitate, coax, cajole, inspire my students’ learning. |

The Reading Program at SFSU was the best investment I have ever made for myself on both professionally and personally. The Certificate program definitely helped to secure my first full-time, tenured teaching position; had it not been for the Reading Certificate, I am certain I would not have gotten the job. It definitely sets you apart from other talented and well-qualified candidates. Thank you, Helen, for your support and wisdom! |

Combined with my M.A. in TESOL, the coursework for the SFSU Certificate in Teaching Post-Secondary Reading has better prepared me to meet the needs of my very diverse student body. I have become a stronger asset to my learning center as well as a better teacher to my students. The LATC is always looking for teachers and tutors, so please visit us on the web at http://www.missioncollege.org/depts/latc/latc.htm (a new page will open). |

| I am enjoying just teaching for once and not having to worry about grad school. However, I plan to pursue a Ph.D. soon in Composition and Rhetoric–- hopefully I will someday help the spread of including reading in most, if notall, of academic literacy instruction. | ||
