M.A. in English, SJSU Certificate in Teaching Composition, 1982 Certificate in Teaching Postsecondary Reading, 2003 |
In Fall 2005 I’ve just begun my first full time teaching position, twenty-three years after earning my M.A. and community college credential. This may be encouraging to job seekers, or not! My instructors and classmates in the reading certificate program made it one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career, inspiring me to return to the teaching field after many years of working in the technology industry. The program has enabled me to teach both reading and writing from a creative as well as critical thinking perspective, and to help students recognize and develop the multiple literacies they need today. |

| I taught English at the secondary level before beginning my Master's (and composition and reading certificates) and I had very little training beforehand. I figured out a lot as I went, but was also left with many unanswered questions about teaching reading. The reading, and integrated reading and writing courses I have taken at SFSU have helped me to better understand the reading process, and have given me the theoretical background to stand firmly behind my instructional decisions. I have also, as a result of the certificate program, greatly expanded my repertoire of activities to not only increase students' engagement with and comprehension of texts, but also help them to see their own processes at work. | ||

M.A., English, Literature,
2005 Certificate in Teacing Postsecondary Reading, 2004 |
Obtaining the reading certificate changed the way I do everything. I think differently, read differently, and certainly teach differently. I am constantly trying to come up with new and better ways to incorporate support for the reading process in all of my literacy classes, and the subsequent spilling of blood, sweat, and tears is always worthwhile. Now I am moving on to obtain a PhD, so I can expend more of the blood and tears and such, because I am completely fascinated by literacy: the reading certificate gave me that too. (Note: My title depends on the college and the semester that I am teaching: Adjunct Reading Instructor, Composition Instructor, Creative Writing Instructor, Literature Instructor) |

I've been teaching since 1968, and I'm still trying to get it right. That's why I did the reading certificate for my sabbatical a few years back. I teach everything from basic and developmental reading and writing to British Literature. Currently, I am President of the English Council of California Two-Year Colleges. For amusement, I work out, listen to classical music, go to the opera, and travel. I'm looking forward to more travel when I retire (sooner rather than later!). |

I absolutely loved this program. The Composition MA, Postsecondary Reading Certificate program, and GTA program (Graduate teaching) provided me with both the practical training and theoretical framework I needed to confidently enter the community college classroom (I just started at College of Marin this Fall!). Most importantly, perhaps--I loved the collaborative atmosphere, supportive professors and brilliant classmates/colleagues. These were some of the best years of my life. |
