I think that getting the certificate along with the M.A in Composition was very worth the effort. Most community colleges I have spoken to are moving toward integrating their reading and writing classes and they want teachers who are able to teach these classes. The SFSU program really prepares you to fill those positions. |

Jan Gregory recommended and encouraged me to take the Reading courses, and her advice has sent me down an unexpected career path (thanks, Jan!). What I loved about the classes was the deep theoretical foundation and the breadth of reading pedagogies—the breadth and depth of the program allow me to tailor my instruction to the particular needs of the various student populations I teach. |

| "Although I never knew, before entering the MA Composition program at SFSU, that I would be a teacher, now I cannot imagine doing anything else! As a reading and writing teacher, I try to build a welcoming and intellectually rigorous classroom environment as I encourage my students to express their opinions freely, to take risks to develop their intellectual, social and academic skills, and to value education and literacy as much as I do." | ||

After being hounded by my fellow alumnae for eons, I have finally been convinced to get my PhD. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good mail-order diploma service? |

Returning to SFSU to complete the Certificate in Post Secondary Reading revitalized my teaching. While I had been teaching since 1990 and had an intuitive grasp of the complex processes involved in developing reading/writing skills, I was aware that I needed additional tools to be more effective with my students. The certificate program required me to study and immerse myself in an integrated reading/writing curriculum that emphasizes the role of prior knowledge and the reader's schema, metacognitive activities, language acquistion research and most importantly the ability to defend one's practices with solid research based on the psychological, physiological, linguistic and socio-cultural of the reading and writing process. This program has given me confidence and already made a difference in my reading and composition classes. |

| Six years out of the SFSU “nest,” I now appreciate and value, professionally, the training and preparation the Reading certificate (and Comp. certificate) provided me. I have been able to contribute in meaningful ways to the vitality of a very forward thinking English department—in between summer travels, of course. | ||

When I first singed up for a reading class at SFSU, I knew that it was supposed to make me more “marketable” as a teacher, but I really had no idea what college-level reading instruction was. As I progressed through the rest of the Composition coursework, I came to understand how and why reading instruction compliments writing instruction so well. But the clincher for me was putting it into practice and actually teaching a reading class! How fun it is to help students think creatively, question what they read, play with words, and most of all, seek out and read material that interests them! |

Since completing my degree & the certificate programs, I have been teaching in the CMS Program—formerly known as the ESL Program—here at SFSU. It has been wonderful keeping in contact with my former instructors and classmates and seeing familiar faces around every corner. I am also working with the American Language Institute so I can be a part of my students’ transitions into the university and follow their paths throughout their careers here. Colleagues and observers often asked me where I learned the activities I use in my reading/writing classes; more often than not my response leads into in-depth discussion about the merits of the postsecondary reading certificate offered here at SFSU. |

| I enjoy teaching English courses and watching student grow. The certificate program has enhanced my ability to understand how to help students overcome problems with reading and comprehension, to recommend reading and writing strategies that actually work, and to see, first hand, the amount of progress that students make once they “get it.” | ||

I enjoy reading between the lines--of anything: advertisements, politicians, news stories, people. It's a sick hobby. My hope is to enhance students' critical reading competence (in a narrow and a broad sense) without creating the disillusionment that can go along with this pasttime. |

My pedagogical goal has always been to balance acceptance and change, to balance teaching that is inclusive and accepting of difference with teaching that students can learn what they once thought they could not learn. I am currently working with a project at City College, funded by the Carnegie Foundation, to maximize the potential for success among basic skills instructors and students. |
