There are twelve major (current and historical) haul-out sites in the San Francisco Bay.   Most of these sites are used by only a small number of animals (Allen 1991, Kopec and Harvey 1995).  Additional, smaller harbor seal haul out sites (used inconsistently or by a very small number of animals) exist in the Bay, but are not shown on this map.  Only three sites (Mowry Slough, Yerba Buena Island, and Castro Rocks) show greater than 40 individuals (Kopec and Harvey 1995) during the breeding and molting seasons.  Strawberry Spit was abandoned during the 1980's because of increased disturbance levels and the decrease in abundance of local food sources.

One of the goals of this project is to learn more about where harbor seals haul out in San Francisco Bay,
and how (by season, time of day, etc) they use these haul out sites.
