Guide Dog Mobility Certificate Courses:

SPED 749: Medical, Educational, and Rehabilitative Implications of Visual Impairment (4 units)
Anatomy and physiology of the eye, disorders of the eye, and the functional/educational implications of vision loss. Functional assessment of low vision, use of prescriptive and non-prescriptive low vision aids. Optimizing use of vision. Application to individualized program planning and implementation. Related research in visual impairment.

SPED 655: Basic Orientation and Mobility for Learners with Visual Impairments (3 units)
Basic mobility techniques. Development of spatial and environmental concepts and sensorimotor skills. Practical application of O&M related concepts to travel in home, school, work, and community environments. Related research in O&M and visual impairment.

SPED 741: Introduction to Canine Assessment & Training (3 units)
Physical, emotional, and psychological development of dogs. Learning and training theories related to both canines and humans. Overview of the evolution and formal use of dog guides and long canes as mobility tools.

SPED 755: Formal Guidework Training (3 units)
Training and communicating with a guide dog. Development of advanced techniques to reduce resistance and avoidance behaviors in potential guide dogs. Mobility techniques and final preparation of guide dogs to work in complex and challenging environments.

SPED 759: Introduction to Client Instruction (3 units)
An introduction to working with a guide dog team, including initial instructional methods and skills, transitioning from cane to guide dog mobility. Sensory strategies for working a guide dog. Orientation & guide dog mobility for special populations.

SPED 761: Instructional Management, Pre- and Post-Training Services (3 units)
An overview of client/guide dog instructional programs, procedures, and techniques. Home interviews and client assessment in preparation for residential training programs. Post-training evaluation and problem solving.

SPED 831: Internship in Guide Dog Mobility (6 units)
Culminating field experiences under the supervision of a certified guide dog mobility instructor.


Additional Courses Leading to the Master of Arts Degree:

SPED 788: Research and Literature, Policy and Practice in Special Education (3 units)
Overview of research used in special education, both to formulate policy and inform practice. Explore various uses of research evidence and controversial topics. Research connected to world of practice. Students write and present research synthesis.

SPED 801: Diversity in Special Education: Family Systems, Resources, and Culture (3 units)
Analysis of social interaction of people with disabilities within changing state and local demographics. Topics in special education discuss culturally diverse populations, counseling techniques, instructional strategies, evaluation, and socialization within the context of family systems and the community.

ISED 797: Seminar in Educational Research (3 units)
Identification and analysis of research problems; research methodology; research techniques including sufficient familiarity with descriptive statistics to interpret research writing; application of research findings to field problems.
