Orientation and Mobility Program

About the San Francisco State University Program:
The San Francisco State University (SFSU) Guide Dog Mobility Program is the first in the world to offer university level professional preparation of guide dog mobility instructors. In collaboration with Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., SFSU's program prepares guide dog mobility instructors to become successful professionals with the skills needed to work with people who have visual impairments, including those who have multiple disabilities and those from diverse cultural backgrounds.

SFSU is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. SFSU's Special Education program is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. is licensed by the State of California Guide Dog Board and is a certified member of the International Guide Dog Federation.

SFSU's related program in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) is nationally approved by The Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER).

SFSU offers two program options:

• Master of Arts Degree in Special Education (emphasis in Guide Dog Mobility)

• SFSU Graduate Certificate in Guide Dog Mobility

Students are welcome to enroll in either option.

Stipends: Stipend assistance is available.
For more information, please contact Dr. Sandra Rosen, Guide Dog Mobility Program Coordinator, at guidedog@sfsu.edu

SFSU also offers Dual Certification:

In addition to completing either the Master’s degree or graduate certificate in guide dog mobility, students who wish, may apply to the Orientation & Mobility (O&M) program to earn dual certification. Some of the courses taken in the Guide Dog sequence can be applied toward a Master’s Degree and/or a California Clinical Rehabilitative Services Credential in O&M.
