Week 8:

What 5 categories of learning outcomes can be remembered by the acronym letters VICAM?

What type of information helps individuals play games such as Jeopardy or Trivial Pursuit?

What is the first step in Gagné's nine events of instruction?

What are the five different intellectual skills?

Name external conditions which influence the five major varieties of learning outcomes.

Robert Gagne, formerly a behaviorist, tried to incorporate cognitive notions into his practical scheme of learning and instruction. One of the most influential people in Instructional Technology, he is principally known for his "Conditions of Learning," which incorporates three major components: a taxonomy of learning outcomes, learning conditions required for the attainment of each outcome, and nine events of instruction.

Gagne's Taxonomy of Learning Outcomes

  • Verbal Information
  • Intellectual Skills
  • Cognitive Strategies
  • Attitudes
  • Motor Skills

Gagné's Nine Events of Instruction and Learning Processes Supported

  1. Gaining Attention: Attention
  2. Informing the learner of the objective: Expectancy
  3. Stimulating recall of prior learning: Retrieval to working memory
  4. Presenting the stimulus: Pattern recognition, selective perception
  5. Providing learner guidance: Chunking, rehearsal, encoding
  6. Eliciting performance: Retrieval, responding
  7. Providing feedback: Reinforcement, error correction
  8. Assessing performance: Responding, retention
  9. Enhancing retention and transfer: Retention, retrieval, generalization

1. Chapter 10

Prepare a lesson plan (pg. 383 question # 1) for teaching using Gagne's instructional model. First, state the learning outcome(s), then write a lesson plan generating instructional strategies to achieve these outcomes by using Gagne's nine events of instruction. Be prepared to present your lesson to the class.

TIP is a tool intended to make learning and instructional theory more accessible to educators. The database contains brief summaries of 50 major theories of learning and instruction. These theories can also be accessed by learning domains and concepts.
