Week 2:

What is instructional development?

What decade saw the beginnings of behavioral objectives?

In what decade did instructional technology "come of age"?

What event caused a great instructional problem in the United States?

Who wrote "The Conditions of Learning"?

This week we will look at the history of instructional development, a systems approach that applies the scientifically derived principles to planning, creating, implementing and evaluating effective instruction. It is the history of ideas rather than events, but the material is divided into decades so you can see the major trends that were taking place. Many of the ideas and theorists introduced in this reading will be explored more in depth as the course progresses.

"A Brief History of Instructional Development", Shrock, 1991

Using the information from your reading, create a timeline that highlights the major events and theorists in the history of instructional development. Create a timeline that reflects the events that have shaped instructional technologies from the past to the 21st century. The readings end in the 1980s so use your own knowledge of present day developments in instructional methods to fill in the decades between 1980 and 2000. On the same timeline, add events from either another aspect of history (wars, inventions, presidents, etc) or significant events from your own life. The timeline can be done on a computer or by hand. Use pictures or symbols to enhance your timeline.

This is a web site with great information about the history of instructional design broken up by decades.
