Learning Conditions Required for Outcomes

In order to effectively plan instruction, learning goals should be categorized into the different types of outcomes that they represent. There are external conditions which Gagné felt were essential for learning the different types of outcomes. These are summarized in the table below.

Type of Outcome

Critical Learning Condition

Verbal Information

1. Present information in small chunks
2. Provide a connection to what learners already know
3. Direct the learner's attention to significant information to help them know what is important

Intellectual Skills

1. Recall previously learned component skills
2. Provide cues for remembering steps to be used
3. Practice to help with the process of retention and transfer

Cognitive Strategies

1. Describe or demonstrate the strategy
2. Allow time for practice using the strategy
2. Provide feedback as to the creativity or originality of the strategy

Attitudes

1.Create an situation where the learner will be successful
2.Assure student identification with an admired human model
3. Arrange for communication of choice
4. Provide feedback

Motor Skills

1. Provide Guidance of what is expected
2. Provide time to practice
3. Provide feedback of performance
