Overview

Students interested in graduate programs in Marine Sciences and Oceanography through San Francisco State University have a number of excellent options.

Seven different marine graduate programs are offered through departments in the College of Science and Engineering:
students reside at SFSU for six of these programs
• students reside at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories for the seventh (note: when applying to multiple marine programs, applications made to this program are decided upon first before applications to the other programs are considered).

For all programs, students have the opportunity to conduct part or all of their studies at off-campus marine stations.

Master of Science Marine Degree Programs

  1. M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Marine Biology
  2. M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Ecology and Systematic Biology
  3. M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Physiology and Behavioral Biology
  4. M.S. in Biology with a concentration in Conservation Biology
  5. M.S. in Applied Geosciences with an emphasis in Physical Oceanography
  6. M.S. in Applied Geosciences with an emphasis in Marine Geology
  7. M.S. in Marine Science (offered at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories)

Marine Stations

Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies - Students enrolling in one of the first six programs above have the option of conducting research at the SFSU Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, RTC, located 22 miles north of the main campus in Marin County. Students in these programs generally enroll in courses offered on the SFSU and RTC campuses, but are also able to register for courses taught at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (see below)

Moss Landing Marine Laboratory - Another option for students is the Marine Laboratory run by a consortium of seven California State University campuses. Moss Landing Marine Laboratory (MLML) is located 100 miles south of SFSU in Moss Landing, CA, on Monterey Bay. This facility offers a coherent marine studies curriculum. Students who wish to attend MLML register at a "home campus," SFSU or one of the other universities in the consortium, and spend most of their time at MLML.
