This is one of the more odd stalked puffballs that has been collected rarely on the dry side of the island of Hawai`i. The basidiospores are passively discharged through the many small holes (ostioles) that develop in the endoperidium that encloses the spore mass (gleba). Sort of a salt shaker on a stick. An allied taxon, Battarrea phalloides , also occurs in similar habitats on the islands of O`ahu and Hawai`i.
