This is the one and only Cortinarius species found in the Hawaiian Islands! It
was first described by Cleland as Cortinarius subcinnamomeus from material collected
in South Australia, but the name was changed to C. clelandii by A. H. Smith to avoid
conflict with an earlier C. subcinnamomeus Karsten. Cortinarius clelandii has been
collected several times under introduced Eucalyptus spp. on the island of Moloka`i.
For a description of the species see Ammirati, Mycotaxon 3:95-101, 1975.
