Boletus xylophilus

Petch

Photograph by D. E. Desjardin © 1996
This species represents the only known Boletus from the Hawaiian Islands. And
it is collected where you would never expect a respectful bolete to grow, viz. in black
sand under Casuarina within 50 m of the ocean! The species was first described from
Malaysia where apparently it was collected on rotten wood. Boletus xylophilus is one
of a small but select group of species in the genus with small, ellipsoid basidiospores.
