Module 1: Dynamic Systems and Development

The purpose of this section is to relate the study of motor development to what you have learned about dynamic systems. In your groups, discuss the following questions and hand in a typed summary of your discussion along with the answers (typed) to the questions in the Connect section. Only one copy of the two sets of questions needs to be handed in for each group. Make sure, therefore, that the name of each participant in the group is on the work that is submitted

Questions:

  1. How would you show the progressive development of a motor skill in a linear view and a circular view?
  2. Why is it legitimate to say that movements are the same from a structural point of view but NO two movements are the same from a detail point of view?
  3. What low dimensional (few in number) variables can we use to characterize the actions and movements that emerge from our high dimensional motor system?
  4. Is there a motor development landscape similar to the dynamic fitness landscape described in the essay?
  5. Is it possible that an organism could develop without a blueprint? Explain.
