Module 1: Dynamic Systems and Development

Developmentalists are still perplexed by fundamental questions that relate to the nature of developmental processes. For example, the process by which a fertilized egg changes into an extremely complex, multicellular organism is, as yet, unexplained. Some theories advocate that the developmental process simply represents the unfolding of a genetic blueprint, while others maintain that development can occur without the need to invoke a plan or blueprint. In this module we will explore a popular contemporary theoretical perspective in motor development, referred to as the dynamic systems approach, to see what it has to say about the process of development.
