Module 1: Dynamic Systems and Development
Dynamic systems theory offers a fascinating way to view age old questions in a new light. Many people see it as a radical way to look at the world, so don't feel too bad if your brain hurts at the end of this module. If your are interested in finding out more about dynamic systems theory there are many excellent resources on the world wide web and in the library. Search key words such as Chaos, complexity, and non linear dynamics in addition to dynamic systems theory to find these resources.
For an excellent discussion of how dynamic systems theory relates to the study of motor development read the following article in your Kin 487 reader (if you haven't already):
Clark, J. E. (1995). On becoming skillful: Patterns and constraints. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 66, 173-183.
Another excellent reference, which can be found in the Kin 486 reader (a copy of which is available under my name in the reserve book room of the library) is:
Katz, D., & Kahn, R. I. (1969). Common characteristics of open systems. In F. D. Emery (Ed.), Systems thinking (pp. 86-104). Baltimore: Penguin.
