Background

Having completed my undergraduate degree in physical education in Australia (Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education), I travelled to the USA to pursue my graduate education. I received my masters degree from California State University, Long Beach in 1990 and my doctoral degree from Louisiana State University in 1994. I worked as a visiting lecturer in the Department of Kinesiology at San Francisco State University for three semesters before accepting a tenure track position in that department in the Fall of 1996. As a former competitor in a number of sports and athletic activities, I am very interested in facilitating the acquisition of motor skills and enhancing human performance. I currently teach and conduct research in the area of skill acquisition and retention.

Projects

I am currently involved in projects that can be divided into two nearly independent lines of research. One line of research involves the description of coordination changes that occur as a function of practice and learning. The ultimate goal is to develop interventions to facilitate coordination change. The second line of research looks at the perceptual, cognitive, and emotional consequences associated with the onset of self-produced locomotion in infancy. The goal is to understand the role of self-produced locomotion in facilitating development in other domains of behavior, with a view to determining activities that will facilitate infant /child development.
