Biology 700 - Assignment 4 - Due 12 April 2000 (15 points)
1.
Use Altavista, Google, Yahoo, or other search engines to identify one website that offers data, description, illustration, bibliographic references, or other significant information pertinent to your subject. You may answer this part of the assignment using a website with which you are already familiar, but if you do so, use at least one of the Web search engines to ascertain how your selected site might be found by someone unfamiliar with the site. |
| Use the attached worksheet to describe and evaluate your chosen site. | |
2.
Select two of the citations you found for Assignments 2 and 3 and use Science Citation Index to identify at least four other papers that refer to those two papers. (The four you select may all cite just one of the two papers you start with, or they may be two-and-two or one-and-three.) If all your Assignment 2 and Assignment 3 references are 1998 or later, you may need to use an older reference as your starting-point. If so, you may use as your starting-point an article you already know of, or find one of the papers identified in Assignment 2 or Assignment 3 and select a reference from the bibliography (list of references) of that paper. Show the complete correct citation for the cited paper (the one you start with) as well as for each of the four citing papers. |
3. |
Use Dissertation Abstracts International and the Comprehensive Dissertation Index to find two dissertations relevant to your topic, and cite each in correct form. (Note: 'relevant' may have to be defined very broadly here.) |
| 4. | What is the best single database, index, or abstract for finding research literature on your topic, and why? |
| 5. | To do a comprehensive search to identify publications on your topic, what additional sources should be investigated? |
