Women in Logistics
Dr. S. Cholette, Associate Professor

Overview

People interested in learning more about Supply Chain related careers should check out WIL (Women in Logistics). The group is based in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Its goal is to get more women to join what has traditionally been a male-dominated field.  Men are welcome to join, and we have many members who are male.  Logistics is a great field to be in- even (perhaps especially) in this era of outsourcing, as you can see here.

Scholarship and Student Memberships

WIL annually sponsors a $2000 scholarship to Bay Area students (male or female) interested in pursuing a career in Supply Chain Management.   The 2011 competition is now open, with the application available here.

Here are our winners for 2010:

·         Nikolay Stochev originally hails from Bulgaria, where he earned his engineering degree.  Since emigrating to the US, he has switched to working in logistics, and he has worked in a variety of sales and operational roles at Clock Freight, Inc. a medium sized shipping company.  Nikolay attended CSU Long Beach to earn a designation as a Global Logistics Specialist, and he is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Golden Gate University.

·         Monica Torres is clearly a driven and hardworking student.  Emigrating from El Salvador four years ago, she had to overcome language barriers and held a variety of retail jobs to pay for her schooling at California Maritime Academy, from which she is scheduled to graduate in 2014.  Her ambition is to work in maritime shipping, and she plans to use her scholarship moneys to help pay for her training cruise on the Golden Bear next summer.

Why else would you consider joining WIL?  Membership confers many other benefits, like access to the job bank, coaching and advice from a mentoring program, and networking at interesting events- like this one with Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom on September 30th.   Our members are enthusiastic to meet students and generate excitement in the field, so this is a great opportunity get some leads for projects or jobs.   Students can join for free and those who submit scholarship applications are automatically added to our membership database.  Just email me at Cholette@sfsu.edu if you are interested.
