Abstract submission information
Abstracts
We are soliciting
abstracts on any topic related to research in estuaries of the Californias. Estuaries are broadly
interpreted as aquatic systems on the land-sea interface, including low-inflow
estuaries, lagoons, bays, river plumes, etc. While the primary interest of CAERS is in
the estuaries of the states of California (US), Baja California (MX) and
Baja California Sur (MX), research on comparable systems is welcome.

Urban Estuaries Where the city meets the sea
Although the study of ecosystems has traditionally often occurred in
isolation of humans and their effects, growing urbanization has forced
us to consider humans as an integral part of many ecosystems. It is
estimated that over half of the U.S. population lives in coastal
regions making our coastal systems particularly susceptible to the
presence of humans. The estuaries of Southern California are
predominantly urban estuaries. Besides roughly 80% loss of area,
remaining estuaries are subject to a suite of human-based effects such
as pollution, altered hydrology, over-harvesting, and introduced
species. Our basic knowledge of physical, chemical and biological
estuarine processes comes from relatively non-urbanized watersheds. The
goal of this meeting is to identify some of the ways that dense human
development changes our traditional understanding of estuarine
processes; and to consider how these differences translate to
appropriate management priorities.
