| Health Career Connection | Places capable interns in healthcare organizations and supports them to achieve their health career goals. Over the past twenty years, HCC interns have been hired by their host organizations upon completion of their internship or education and have gone on to successful careers in public health, medicine or clinical programs such as nursing. |

| VolunteerMatch.org | This is a great site -- they have a ton of bona fide volunteer opportunities in the Bay Area. Search by opportunities in "health and medicine". |
| Women's Community Clinic (Panhandle) | They have training every February and October for new volunteers. Volunteers work the front desk for six months and then may become health educators and work directly with patients. |
Barb Finnin | 415-379-7802 x302 |
| Maitri AIDS Hospice (Lower Haight) | Maitri is looking for very mature and emotionally/spiritually grounded volunteers to serve as companions to very critically ill residents. There is a three-day training every spring and fall (February in early 2006). Very responsive to volunteer inquiries. |
| UCSF Hospital Volunteers (Inner Sunset) | If you call the volunteer services number and leave a message, they are really good about getting back to you with the next volunteer orientation dates. Fill out an application and take it with you to the orientation. |

| Clinica Martin-Baro (Mission District) | Clinic opening date is uncertain -- end of 2006 at the earliest. Volunteering requires a one-year commitment and taking a RAZA studies class at SFSU, as well as a weekly meeting and committee work in addition to volunteering at the clinic. Affiliated with UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine. |

| San Francisco General Hospital (Potrero Hill) | Currently accepting applications. Don't be disheartened if their website still indicates, "We are not accepting volunteers now; please check back shortly." This indication is an error. |
Ariel Chan | 415-206-8495 |
| Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic (Upper Haight) | Requires a one-year commitment. Opportunities at the front desk and as a medical assistant. Orientations are about every three months (one is in late January) and on an as-needed basis. Call the number listed to hear when the next training is and find out the coordinator's email address so that you can contact her.. |
Xiomara Rayo | 415-487-5638 ext. 103 |
| San Francisco Community Clinic Consortium | This website basically just says, if you want to volunteer for one of the clinics in the consortium, contact them yourself. Gives contact info for all nine clinics, some listed in this document, and some others. |
| San Francisco Free Clinic (Richmond District) | Opportunities in the front office -- reception, etc. No formal volunteer orientation. Call the number listed, ask for Paula Martin, and she will tell you whether they need people currently and send you an application. |
Paula Martin | 415-750-9087 |
| Tom Waddell Health Center | I'm not sure from their website that they're looking for volunteers. |
415-355-7400 |
| Glide Health Services (Tenderloin) | I answered a craigslist ad to volunteer in kind of a medical assistant role and never heard back. From their website, it looks like they are looking mostly for actual health professionals. But they did put up that one ad, so you can give them a try. |
| St. James Infirmary | Offers free, confidential, nonjudgmental medical and social services for female, trans-gendered, and male sex workers. It is the first occupational safety and health clinic for sex workers anywhere run by and for sex workers! "I remember them offering a comprehensive training on harm-reduction theory and application as well as working with some amazingly interesting and colorful people." states an SFSU post-bac. |

| California Pacific Medical Center (Inner Richmond, Duboce Triangle, or Pacific Heights) | I responded to their ad on volunteermatch.org and heard back from them within the week. From their website, it looks like they have a lot of opportunities. Must commit to 100 hours. There are two-hour orientations once a month. |
| Craigslist.org | You can try looking for volunteer opportunities on Craigslist, but many listings seem to be cynical and exploitative attempts to get free labor. |
East Bay Opportunities |
| Berkeley Free Clinic | They have lots of great opportunities, with varying degrees of training and commitment. The most intense is the "medical section," which has a three-month long training period during which you go train every Saturday and Sunday and essentially learn to medical assist. It requires a two-year commitment. Make sure you can really commit! They only accept applications for the Medical Section twice a year. |

| Alta Bates Medical Center |
| Circle of Care; East Bay Agency for Children | Great volunteer opportunity working with children who have recently lost a parent. |

| Alameda County Medical Center |
| Berkeley Suitcase Clinic | My friend recommended this homeless clinic in Berkeley as a good volunteer opportunity, without a lot of process before you can volunteer. I couldn't find much about it on the web, though. You can google it and see what you get. |
