Summer Science Institute
Summer Science Institute (SSI), through a combination of lectures, labs, workshops and visits of health profession schools, helps economically and/or educationally disadvantaged undergraduates succeed in major's introductory science course work and in making informed decisions regarding choice of health profession. The health professions covered include medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, physical therapy, public health and many others. Academic credit is conferred through a 2-unit Science Concepts (Sci 235) course during the 8-week summer program (R2 Session, M-F, 8-11 am, June 22-Aug 14). During the fall and spring, enrollment in an SSI-dedicated Colloquium maintains academic and peer support. A stipend is provided to each SSI student to help ease financial burdens. In 2008, a group of 14 SFSU students and one from a nearby university participated in SSI. SSI accepts a new group of as many as 24 students each summer.
Applications are now available for summer 2009 (see SSI links above or to the right).
.
SSI also hires SFSU juniors/seniors and post-bacs/alumni as Assistant Mentors and Mentors, respectively. These staff form close relationships with SSI students in an effort to create a safe, caring community that supports the academic and career development of all parties involved. Thus, Assistant Mentors and Mentors benefit by both giving and receiving support. Prospective Assistant Mentors and Mentors should contact Hieu Do (do.h@summerscienceinstitute.org) .
