Computer Applications in Kinesiology

 Course Description:

The use of the microcomputer as a tool for personal productivity, professional productivity and research is explored. The Windows operating system, word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, web site creation, Visual Basic for applications programming, Internet, biomechanical analysis and graphics application software for the PC standard computer are introduced. The course will involve two traditional lecture / discussions sessions (supported through PowerPoint materials) per week and two laboratory meetings per week. Laboratory activities will involve the solution of homework problems and computer based laboratory activities

 Course Content:

 A.  Introduction to PC hardware

        B.  Windows XP - Working with a graphical user interface.

        C.  Internet Explorer and program installation procedures.

        C. An introduction to graphics file editing.

        D. An introduction to MS Office for Windows applications:

      1) Word word-processing software

      2) Excel spread sheet data analysis

      3) PowerPoint presentation software

      4) Access database management

 F.   Special Software.

      1) Front Page Web Publishing

      2) Visual Basic for Applications

      3) Digital Video Explorer

 

Course Outcomes:

At the end of this course the student will be able to:

        1)    Create, edit and format word processing files for the purpose of producing term papers, research reports, letters, email messages, and web page documents.

        2)    Use the Internet to browse for information and download files and programs.

        3)    Use email software to send and receive messages and attachments.

        4)    Perform file management of a variety of files and back these files up on removable media.

        5)    Use spreadsheet software to manage financial and research data, and perform a basic statistical analysis of research data.

        6)    Use spreadsheet software to create and modify graphical charts.

        7)    Create PowerPoint presentations that are composed of both text and graphical information.

        8)    Create and manage a flat file database with the Access software.

        9)    Publish a personalized multi-page Web Site on the SFSU server.

        10)  Create and modify programs with the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications software.

Final Exam: According to Academic Senate policy F76-12 a time period is set aside at the end of each semester for a formal examination period.  All classes are expected to meet during the final examination period whether an examination is given or not.  The final examination schedule is published each semester in the Class Schedule. http://www.sfsu.edu/~acaffrs/faculty_manual/8_8.htm

CHHS Withdrawal Policy: The last day to drop a class is FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11TH, 2009. From September 14th-November 19th, you must submit a withdrawal petition. Withdrawal from a class after September 11th, will be considered for serious and compelling reasons only, and must have accompanying documentation. The following reasons are not considered serious and compelling: Changing your major, poor performance, class not required for graduation/major, or more time needed for other classes. If you wish to withdraw from class due to unexpected changes in your work schedule, illness or family emergencies, documentation will be required, along with a copy of unofficial transcripts. If you are requesting a withdrawal, bring your petition and appropriate documentation to the instructor. From November 20th-December 14th, you may not withdraw from a class or the University, except in the case of a serious documented illness or verified accident.

 

CR/NC Option: October 20th, 2009 (by 5PM) is the last day to request the CR/NC option. The Associate Dean will not approve requests for changes if you miss this deadline.

 

Late Add Policy: The period to add classes with a late permit number is September 9th-22nd

(midnight), 2009. It is your responsibility to procure a late permit number from your instructor and add the class. Faculty cannot add you into a class. After this deadline, a CHHS Late Add Justification Form and an Add Form must be signed by your instructor, Chair and CHHS Associate Dean to add. This will be approved only if there was an administrative error.

Check your registration through MySFSU: Sign up for CR/NC, drop and add classes by the appropriate deadline online through MySFSU. ALWAYS check your registration after making any changes and BEFORE deadlines to be sure you are registered properly for your classes. This is a student responsibility.

Deadlines for all registration procedures, including withdrawals and requests for credit/no credit, are listed in the class schedule and will be strictly adhered to by the instructor, the Department Chair and the Associate Dean of College of Health & Human Services.
