This is an on going study on how culture influences the adaptive strategies of the Chinese in the Philippines, Japan and the United States. The research investigates the macro and micro environmental variables responsible for the adaptive patterns of the Chinese in the three countries. Issues of racism, nationalism, caste and class and their impacts on ethnic relations, the development and use of ethnic social networks and identities are investigated. This project is partly funded by the Japan Ministry of Education via the East Asian Anthropology Research Group of the National University of Tsukuba.Bernard Wong is the principal investigator of this project and he is currently writing a book on the same subject.
This project has two parts. Part 1 concentrates on the Chinese, East Asian Indians and Japanese in Silicon Valley. Part 2 concentrates on other Asians such as the Vietnamese and the Hmong people.This project is coordinated by Dr. Bernard Wong (Anthropology, San Francisco State University) and Dr. Susan Squire (GVO, Inc. Palo Alto).
