Cells, Microbes, & Life - Biol 175
Extra Credit
Instructor: Antipa
I. Literature Assignment (Due on or Before September
29th)
From the list of original research articles provided, prepare a one (1)
page summary of the article. You may wish to peruse the following
journals to get an idea of what this assignment will entail.
1) Journal of Cell Science 2) Journal of Cell Biology 3) Cell
I suggest that you use a summary format that follows the traditional
scientific style of: Introduction, Materials & Methods, Results,
and Discussion. A paragraph devoted to each is suggested. Since the
content of each paragraph should be obvious, a header or title for the
paragraphs is not necessary.
The results are by far the most important part of the researchers
paper, and, as a consequence, the results should be the main paragraph
of your summary review.
However, do have a good, brief introductory paragraph that introduces
your summary and hints to the conclusion. And have a concluding
paragraph that includes the discussion and conclusion(s).
Please understand what was done, and very briefly describe the methods
used to collect the data. Streamline the materials and methods so you
will have room for the important Results and Discussion/Conclusion(s).
Think of your report as an executive summary that must be in your own
words. Do not use the authors words or paraphrase the authors words.
This is your paper, so use your ideas and words.
II. White Paper (Due on or Before November 10th)
From articles in this semester's newspaper, follow a topic for several
weeks that would be relevant to Biol 175 (Cells, Microbes, & Life)
and prepare a one (1) page summary of the ongoing dialog. Include
copies of the news items that you have used, and please be sure to
include citation and source for each article.
Biology 175 Cells, Microbes, & Life is a new
class. You will be able to enhance your grade by participation in
molding the course for future students. I know that if you provide me
with your comments and suggestions that this will make a valuable
contribution to this general education course for all students and
educated voters. Please review the materials we have covered this far
and through the rest of the semester and provide me with written
comments addressing SOME OR ALL of the following:
* Words that were confusing and could (should) be included in a
glossary.
* Topics that were covered in too much detail.
* Topics that were not covered sufficiently.
* Topics that you thought were going to be covered, but were not
covered.
* Topics that you would have like to be covered.
* Comment on the Gall pages in the reader.
* Comment on readings from the Siegfried chapters in the reader.
* Comment on readings from the Harold chapters in the reader.
* Comment on readings from the DeDuve chapters in the reader.
* Comment on the Antipa pages in the reader.
* We will be working on a new reader, what do you think we should
concentrate on while we do that?
* Any other comments, please.
