Chapter 1 – Urbanization and Its Discontents

Using global data and data from the San Francisco Bay Area, chapter 1 introduces the topic of urbanization. It describes the urbanization of the human population over time, with particular emphasis on recent times. It describes urban problems such as traffic congestion, conflicts between the built and natural environments, and spatial inequality as well as opportunities that urbanization presents. The final part of chapter 1 describes theoretical and applied solutions to urban issues such as urban limit lines, greenbelts, fair share housing, and transit-oriented development and how spatial analysis can help implement them.
