Chapter 4 – GIS analysis in planning social service delivery

This chapter focuses on basic GIS capabilities valuable for social service providers. It shows applications of GIS and spatial analyses that can benefit social service delivery agencies that focus on children in poverty, with an emphasis on the spatial distribution of children in poverty in relation to Head Start centers in San Francisco. It discusses proximity analysis, multi-layer analysis, and shows their value for social service agencies in deciding where to locate new facilities. It includes vector and raster applications. Exercises 3 and 4 uses data analyzed in this chapter.
