Palimpsest 1 is the first of a series of discus-like structures made of editions of etchings and lithographs I hand printed between 1984 and 1986. The prints were torn and hinged into a long narrow strip of paper. The strip was then rolled into a discus twelve inches in diameter and one inch thick. The end result shows hints of ink from previous works covered, or partly erased, underneath many new layers. The hint of an etching from 1985 editioned in Montreal, wrapped around a lithograph printed while I was a student in Madison, WI.
Upon looking at the artwork I am not unlike a dendrochronologist who uses tree rings to answer questions about how past events affect the present.
