Lab Instrumentation and Capabilities

The Groundwater and Water Resources (GWR) Laboratory includes the following laboratory instrumentation and hydrogeology field equipment:


Laboratory:

Environmental/Aqueous Geochemistry & Water-Sediment Relations

Decagon Devices WP4C Dewpoint Potentiometer

    • Measures: soil water potential, water potential
    • Applications: characterizing moisture release/retention curves, soil expansion, and other fundamental rock/soil-water hydraulic relations necessary for calibration of the vadose zone and recharge numerical simulations.

    Dionex ICS-900 single-channel ion chromatography system

    • AS22 4 mm carbonate eluent anion-exchange column
    • Measures: major inorganic anions and low molecular weight organic acids, including fluoride, acetate, formate, chloride, nitrite, bromide, nitrate, phosphate, and sulfate.
    • CS12A 4 mm cation-exchange column
    • Measures: major inorganic cations including lithium, sodium, ammonium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium.
    • CS5A 4 mm metals column
    • Measures: iron, manganese, and other metals.
    • MMS 300 membrane suppression with displacement chemical regeneration
    • AS-DV autosampler
    • Windows XP Workstation and Chromeleon 6.8 SE

  • Redi-Flo portable submersilbe pump for monitoring wells
  • Steel and electronic water-level meters
  • Meteorological stations: Campbell scientific CR1000, 16-channel multiplexer, CE8 current excitation module, SC105, weather resistant enclosure, HMP 45C relative humidity probe, L200X pyranometer, R.M. Young Wind Sentry set, TE525WS tipping bucket rain gage, CS106 barometer.
  • HYPNOS III (continuous measurements of redox potentials and temperatures in soils)
  • Suction infiltrometers
  • UMS KSAT benchtop saturated hydraulic conductivity instrument
  • Dualhead infiltrometer (SATURO)
  • Decagon Devices Em50 data loggers
  • Decagon Devices MPS-2 water potential sensors.
  • Decagon Devices 5TM water temperature sensors
  • Decagon Devices G3 drain gauge and sensor.
  • YSI-556 handheld multiparameter instrument (dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, temperature, and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP))
  • Solinst Inc. LTC (water level, temperature, conductivity) Levelogger probes
  • YSI handheld single parameter field meters (pH, conductivity, temperature)
  • Hand auger and soil coring equipment
