Welcome to the
Communicative Disorders Clinic page!

FOR PROSPECTIVE AND ACTIVE CLIENTS

About Our Clinic. The Communicative Disorders Clinic at San Francisco State University was established more than 50 years ago. The CD Clinic is an educational and training facility for master’s level clinicians preparing to enter the profession of speech-language pathology. Graduate students provide screenings, diagnostic evaluations, and therapeutic services to infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and adults with various disorders of speech, language, and hearing.

Because we are a training facility, we are able to offer screenings, diagnostic evaluations, and speech and language therapy services at a reduced fee. These services are provided during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

All diagnostic and therapy services are offered by appointment and are performed under the direct supervision of state-licensed and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certified faculty.

Speech-Language Pathology Services. The CD clinic facilities feature closed circuit television for supervision, training, and observation purposes. The clinicians’ materials room houses a variety of tests, protocols, and therapy materials appropriate for assessment and intervention. The speech and language clinics offer one-on-one and small group therapy sessions for the disorders of speech, language, and hearing including:

  • Speech sound production errors
  • Developmental language delay
  • Stuttering and fluency disorders
  • Oral motor disorders
  • Voice disorders
  • Laryngectomy
  • Speech and language disorders associated with hearing impairment
  • Speech or language disorders resulting from brain injury, stroke, or neuromuscular disability (i.e., aphasia, dysarthria, apraxia)
  • Speech production errors resulting from craniofacial anomalies
  • Central Auditory Processing Disorders
  • Accent modification
  • Language enrichment for preschoolers

Individual and small group therapy sessions are typically scheduled for 55 minutes, one to two times per week. Family involvement and participation is highly encouraged to promote understanding and generalization of good communication practices into the individual's environment.

The goal of the CD Clinic faculty is to educate the speech-language pathologist of tomorrow. In addition, the CD Clinic provides individuals in the Bay Area with much-needed, high quality services at an affordable cost.

Located on the ground floor of the new wing of Burk Hall, the CD Clinic was designed and constructed to be accessible to disabled individuals. Adaptive features include elevators, amplified telephones, and wheelchair-friendly water fountains and rest rooms.

FOR GRADUATE STUDENT CLINICIANS

The location of the Communicative Disorders Clinic in the San Francisco Bay Area affords the students an opportunity to work in a variety of settings, with a multicultural population representing many communicative disorders across all age groups.

Annually, students provide diagnostic and therapeutic services to more than 350 children and adults within the SFSU CD Clinic. Graduate students complete their off-campus internships in Bay Area acute care facilities, skilled nursing facilities, hospital outpatient clinics, community speech and hearing centers, and speech-language pathology private practices. Additionally, graduate students complete their speech-language pathology services credential including special class authorization experiences by student teaching in the Bay Area public schools.

Virtually all types of communicative disorders are represented in these sites including articulation and phonological disorders, autism, language differences and disorders, adult aphasia, dysarthria, dysphagia, apraxia, laryngectomy, voice disorders, stuttering, hearing impairment, and deafness.

The cultural diversity of the CD clinic population is much like the diversity of the individuals who live in the San Francisco Bay Area: African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian, Hispanic, and White.

All age groups are represented in these sites, from infants to senior citizens.
